I’m actually with you. It’s beyond absurd now. I can’t get a bottle of McKenna or eagle rare without standing in line now.

And the driving force is fomo. All these dudes just want to show off whatever “rare” bourbon they scored. It’s pretty fricking cringeworthy. There are plenty of good bottles that sit on the shelf everyday. Plus if you want to pay a little more you can get some scotches that blow bourbon away with depth and complexity.

I think it’s a natural evolution especially if you’ve been hunting since before the boom. Honestly I can’t wait for all these neck beards to move on to mezcal or rum or some other shite.

Who here is tired of buying every bottle you come across?

Since I'm kinda new to this game, I have been buying more than I need to get an idea of what I like. Probably @ about 22 varieties since the fall. I bought the Woodford Reserve 2019 Master's Collection Chocolate Malted Rye as the most expensive @$119. I bought a bottle of Whistle Pig 10 for $75 and thought it was way overpriced. A year later, Nate at Oak Point in Watson gave me a taste of Whistle Pig 10 store pick Maple Bacon. I loved it and bought that. If it's not a store pick, I won't spend that much on a shelf Whistle Pig. There are still a few higher dollars on my list that I will pull the trigger on: ECBP, Booker's, and Baker's.

quote:

I’ve decided to stick to sub-$40 bourbons, mainly store picks. My favorite bourbon I picked up this year was a $19 bottle of Buffalo Trace store pick, a $30 ER10 store pick was my second favorite.

I'll error on the side of store picks too. I won't buy BT or ER10 unless it's a store pick. It's hard to beat WT1101 for the price, proof, and taste. Sazerac rye is $22 and bursting with flavor. EC small batch is a buy.

I'll pass on the Larceny, Maker's Mark, Basil Haydens,
woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, and Port Finish-Angel's Envy.

There is only one bourbon over $40 that I will buy, it’s EHT single barrel.

Rare Breed is great but for $50 it's overpriced. I rather buy Belle Meade Bourbon Cask Strength Reserve for a few dollars more.

quote:

Now don't get get me wrong, I will still go to raffles, try to win some antique collections or Pappy, but no more dropping money on the next bottle I come across.

I have no desire to stand around in a grocery store lined up like cattle for hours while paying for an opportunity to buy whiskey. Guess I'll never know what Weller 12 tastes like... :)

Didn't weigh this one to check the proof, but it tastes good to me.

Can’t find anything in Alabama. I’ve just been sticking to Russell’s because you can find it easily and picking up Elijah Craig barrel proof when I run across one.

That’s smart. ECBP shows up fairly regularly at the specialty stores and stays around for a minute. Thankfully the taters don’t clear the shelves. They’ve also done some great single barrel knob creek 120 and Elijah Craig.

I like raffles, especially Calandro’s, because it’s for charity, ton of samples, and great just shooting the shite with people.
I’ve won two bottles at Calandro’s (actually both on the same night), MWND & GTS.
I traded the Stagg to a regular member here and got some great scotch’s and Japanese whiskies in the trade.
Last year I won three bottles at Hokus Pokus & Harvest raffles, W12, OWA107, and Mich10.
I have won one bottle of PVW20 about 6 years ago at Hokus Pokus.
Raffles can be fun if you let them.

The one store pick I had I wasn't a fan of. Other Knob Creek choices I've had didn't 'turn my Knob' in the right direction either. Still, will give other opportunities in the future.

Yea in a black tube. Get some, stick in freezer, profit.

It’s cheap and good for how easy it is to toss in da glass or taste from the tap.
