If you are wanting something a little more economical, The Gumbo Shop is a nice choice. I have always enjoyed their food and it wont break the bank. It can get crowded though so plan ahead its not a very big place.

I love Commander's, but honestly, I don't find their night menus to always be "New Orleansy", so do take a look before deciding.

Personally, I think I'd go to Galatoire's or Arnaud's.

Antoines gets the nod because they are the oldest in continous operation or something like that. There is a debate about which one is older depending on what criteria is being used.

Union is older, but Antoines is continously owned by the same family since its inception. Union has passed ownership a few times. Antoine's is the oldest continuosly owned restaurant in America. That is where the claim comes from.

Well, I really don't care, I like both for their food and atmosphere. BUT, the poster said OLDEST, not the one that was in continuous operation the longest. I merely stated that Union was the oldest, and I'm fairly certain that is correct.
As far as what "criteria" is used to determine oldest, in my humble, farm country opinion, oldest means whichever one is older.....glassman, you were at both of their grand openings, which came first?

Assuming you are staying in the quarter, don't leave it and go to Commanders or some other place Uptown. It sounds like you guys have never been to the French Quarter, so spend as much time there as possible. No place in America like it.

Go to Bayona for dinner.

ETA: Take her to Commander's on your next trip.

Cafe ameila on Royal st...great food and drinks. They have homemade blueberry ice tea and you can sit outside in a garden with a fountain to eat. Very romantic!
