Looking for good quality beef cheeks. Would fork over the extra for Prime. Trying to avoid the Mexican markets as I’ve heard the quality is less than desirable. If someone can dispute that I would be willing to reconsider.

So far, I’ve tried...

Costco (talked to butcher)
Walmart (desperate)
Iversteen Farms (talked to butcher)
Rouses
Whole Foods
Alexander’s Market (talked to butcher)
Fresh Market
Maxwells market (talked to butcher)

Please help.

Sounds like you’ve exhausted all options other than the Mexican markets. Whoever told you they’re lacking quality probably has a wall around their yard.

So all the butchers you talked with couldn’t help you procure them?

Alexander’s mentioned that they would have to look in the catalog and it would probably be a 25+ lb bulk order minimum.

But no, no help.

Exactly what I was going to say. What are you making that it needs to be high quality?

I seem to recall buying beef cheeks at Tramonte's once. I went in there to look around and they had them.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Beef cheeks are superior to Brisket for smoking, and superior to roast for slow braising. The single most flavorful cut for low and slow cooking. Texas style smoked beef cheeks will blow your socks off if done right.

You sure do know a lot about something you can’t find.

Braised beef cheeks at Sylvain remain as one of the most memorable dishes I’ve ever had.

Texas style smoke beef cheeks at Blue Oak BBQ 2 weeks ago were amazing.

Every Tuesday we grab tacos at the local grocery/ restaurant near work and barbacoa is always one of my choices.

I’m a beef cheek fan, and the quality does matter when smoking whole. When stewed down, I would agree it’s not as important.

The cheeks aren’t graded as the heads of steers aren’t. I’ve bought them at Whole Foods and at Wal Mart. LaMorenita and Ideal Market have them too. I’ve smoked them but can’t get them right like that. But I braise them with a bit of beef broth, some onions, hatch peppers, adobo peppers and sauce and the Mexican sofrito.

Then make great tacos.
