Never. Root beer or GTFO.

I can't remember ever having one.
Back in the 60s and 70s, there was a popular wedding reception punch made with chilled gingerale, and some kind of sherbet, either orange or lime I think. Back then, it went well with a piece of wedding cake and most common folk served it for their daughter's wedding.
Occasionally the wife will make one of those for me and tell me it is what we had at our wedding. I evidently had a hard drive crash several years back and lost quite a bit of ancient data from my storage bank, so I tell her my memories don't go back that far. It is always good and I always tell her how nice it is to have some again.
I quit my professional Chef job (flat griddle burger flipper and deep fryer operator) at T-Willies Frostop when I turned 17, so the last root beer float I had was sometime in the month or two before I decided to change career paths. That was closer to 100 years ago than I care to think about.

North State street in Jackson, MS. Long gone for many years now. John Wilson owned T-Willies on North State and a Regular Frostop on Ellis Avenue back then. After I worked for Mr. Wilson when I was in high school (over 60 years ago), he sold both places and moved (To New Orleans) and was a VP for Plantation Fried Chicken, a Frostop Corp. start up that eventually failed. John Wilson was one of the best people I ever worked for.

Try Blue Bell Dr Pepper Float ice cream. It is great.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a Coke Float but it’s probably better than that nasty arse Root Beer. Maybe I’m traumatized from the home made Root Beer, because that crap probably tastes like something you would get out of a SE Louisiana ditch.

Well yeah. Or Big Red. But Coke? Nah. Not since I had the ability to choose.

Meh. Got some for my kids last night. Had a couple bites. If I’m eating ice cream that won’t be it.

Spot on, root beer is gross. Coke is fantastic.

I remember that punch well. It was ginger ale, 7Up, and either lime or pineapple sherbet. It was seriously at every shower and wedding back then.
