When did cream cheese become a staple in sushi rolls?

...in the US. I’ve been thriving on sashimi and poke bowls for years. Recently looked at the “rolls” menu and couldn’t believe how many had cream cheese.
What in the frick is going on in America?

It's a fun change of texture.
Stick to sashimi?

It's cheap filler, it lasts a long time, and it's America

It's usually salmon rolls with the cream cheese and it's because salmon and cream cheese is great. Ask them not to include it, if it bothers you.

Fair answer.
Tempura fried spicy tuna roll with cream cheese is totally not "sushi" but a few pieces are pretty tasty.

Nigiri is my go to. Rolls are rip offs.

Ever since we westernized sushi.
Soo.. I'd guess the 80's.
Salmon was brought into sushi by a big push from a Norwegian salesman.
As soon as a chef put his love for the combo it was a thing.
I'll agree that the fact cream cheese sticks to your mouth forever is condescending to the what traditional sushi is, but cuisine making a few alterations is fine.
You dont like it. Dont get it

Fat people in po dunk towns go in and order all the fried rolls covered in sauces and stuffed with cream cheese and post on their Instagram how much they love sushi

Never said I don’t like it.

The lobby for Big Cream Cheese has been running shite in this country for decades.

I like cream cheese, but it's overuse the last few years is disgusting. It is to today as Jello was to the 50's + 60's. Your children will laugh at your recipes one day.

I don't know, but it's fricking gross.
I can't stand when they put that crunchy shite on everything too.

This. Pretty much the only place I like it is in those bacon-wrapped grilled jalapeño peppers that sometimes are stuffed inside some venison. However, I bet Tzatziki would be the superior sauce to use just about anywhere cream cheese is used in savory dishes.

Exactly. Cream cheese is nasty, yet people want it in everything now.
In Texas, lots of good stuffed meat and peppers ruined because that garbage is shoved in.

Exactly my point. You should be clubbed for ruining such a good combo like seasoned meat and pepper with that nasty asian.
