Glenmorangie 10 Yr. is a good intro and a decent price under $40. This is basic Highland Scotch. No coloring or chill filtering which is something you will learn and appreciate as you get into others. Because scotch is different from region to region and cask type can change taste too, you want to try some of the different regions and cask influences. If you like sherry, Aberlour Double Cask is a good one combining bourbon and sherry cask finishes. You can get this at Martins for under 40 as well. Aberlour is a Speyside scotch which is a subset of the Highlands. There are alos lowlands, albeit not many, but Glenkinchie 12 is a good one. It is light and not too challenging for an intro. Cardhu 12 is another good Speyside to start with as well. If you move into the Islands and Islay you will experience more peat and smoke tastes. Highland Park 12 is a good one to try and very popular. You get a heathery peat flavor with a little brine and smoke mixed with sherry notes.
As for my favorites - I like Lagavulin 16, Aberlour Doublewood 12, Highland park 12, Glenmorangie Quinta Rubin 12 (Excellent port cask finish) and Talisker 10

Balvenie Doublewood. Runs about $70
Wow, you can get it in BR for about $50.

For blends, I like Isle of Sky. Also Compass Box makes some excellent blends but they can be pricey. The Kings St. Artisan blend they make is real nice. LINK

If you're just starting Scotch, its best to ease in with a Highland or Speyside, either a blend (Monkey Shoulder is solid and won't break the bank) or one of the classic Glens (Glenmorangie, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich). Then, if you decide you like it, work your way up to the peat monsters (Laphroaig, Ardbeg, etc). Highland Park 12 bridges that gap well.

Well I said "about 70"
Rouses keeps it around 70 and Albertsons has a sale often and keeps it around 60. Where do you find it for 50?

Monkey Shoulder is excellent a mix of three single malts Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie and a great intro.
