Love the drop biscuits

I sat right next to Aunt Florence's salad station the one time I ate at the one in Greenville. We have a menu that she signed for us. Her salad was a beautiful exercise in simplicity.

Ate in BR a few years back, was disappointed with the overall flavor. It basically had no seasoning at all. I don’t eat steak sauce with my steaks. I use just salt and pepper at home on mine, but I eat it how it is at whatever place we go. Just expected more than a bland piece of beef.

Inconsistent. I feel like the first time I ate there, I had one of the best steaks of my life. I've been back once or twice and they weren't nearly as good

This has been my experience at the 6 or 7 I have eaten at.

I've got a nostalgic soft spot for Doe's Little Rock, so I'll always go back, but sometimes the steak isn't anything special.

The original is a phenomenal steak, with an even better atmosphere. The possibility of it being your last helps it taste even better. The prospect of being murdered before you get out Greenville just makes it.

Seriously, they do have a bad arse steak in Greenville. I live in Greenwood, so we’ll make the 45 minute trip 2 or 3 times a year with friends. It’s never let me down the 25-30 times I’ve been there... If you ever want to attempt to emulate it, get their seasoning and do a reverse sear. You can get it fairly close to the original.

Every franchise location I’ve tried has sucked dick. Haven’t been to Little Rock or Fayetteville though.

So they didn’t have salt and pepper shakers on the table? I mean if you only salt and pepper it at home how can Doe’s be bland? Should they sauté it in A-1?

I don’t think they did have salt and pepper shakers on the table now that you mention it.The point of a chef/cook is to prepare the food the way the restaurant expects it to taste.

So do you go to every place putting salt and pepper on everything without muttering anything to yourself or whomever may grace your lovely presence? I doubt it. You expect food to have flavor and possibly something you can’t replicate at home easily. Otherwise, it would defeat the purpose of you going to a restaurant.

Sorry, you are the manager or a cook at Doe’s, I didn’t choose your career path.

Try Canes they don’t season their chicken either, but I like their sauce.

It’s a steak. We aren’t talking about “possibly something you can’t replicate at home.” It’s Doe’s Steakhouse, not Le Bernardin.

By your own admission you eat steaks with only salt and pepper. So what do you expect? Covered with Tony’s? Italian dressing? Maybe Ranch flavored porterhouse?

It’s beef. It tastes like beef. What the hell else do you want it to taste like? Chicken?

“The point of a chef/cook is to prepare the food the way the restaurant wants it to taste.”

Yeah....it tastes like steak. What the frick does this sentence even mean?

I expect it to taste like seasoned beef. No salt, no pepper, nothing. Proper seasoning is part of cooking. You may like your food tasteless, but I don’t. I’ve had better steaks at Texas Roadhouse and even Outback. It’s just my opinion, who cares what I think?
Apparently, the man who asked the board does.

I have only eaten at the Greenville location and feel that the rustic atmosphere probably added to the experience. The steak and tamales were great. The salad was a little simple but the meal was good. Did not really realize that it was a chain. I would think that the original location would be hard to duplicate. Now that I think about it, that is probably the only place I have ever eaten that had an armed guard stationed outside.

Having Delta and Pine Land pick up the bill might have also helped with my favorable review.

The one in Greenville, MS is awesome. The one in Little Rock is good but not as good as Greenville. I use to eat at them in the 1990’s and they were dives and there was only two of them. I’ve eaten at the one in Baton Rouge and thought is was just okay. The one in Monroe was pretty good. I ate at one in Biloxi and the stars must of aligned just right and got lucky because that was one of the best steaks I’ve ever eaten. I don’t think it was the steakhouse I believe I just got lucky on that particular porterhouse that Doe’s bought from their supplier. In my opinion sadly the one in Baton Rouge was the worst of the ones I’ve eaten at over many years. I don’t know if all their locations are owned by the same family because it seems to me each place taste different, look different, and the menus aren’t the same. Hell at the original locations I think the only steak you could order was a porterhouse or t-bone and maybe a strip. That and you had two choices of ounces per steak. There were no ribeyes or filets.

I like Doe's for what it is, Giant steaks and laid back atmosphere. The tamales are good and I like soaking up the steak juices with some fries.

Saying “Doe’s Eat Place” should imply the Greenville location. Certainly not the one in Baton Rouge. There are several satellite locations, with varying levels of goodness, but there is only 1 Doe’s Eat Place. Unless you’re walking past an armed guard and into a kitchen you ain’t there.

Sadly the closest the BR one gets to the original is patrons getting killed in the parking lot.

Been a few times to the BR one and each time hoping it was great and each time wondering what the hell I just dropped all that money on.

go for lunch regularly and get the hamburger steak. It's fricking incredible.

Have been for dinner and gotten the filet and it was ok, but not worth $60. They also charged 5.99 for a side of asparagus and then brought out 3 pieces of asparagus.

That said, still crush it for lunch, just dont go for dinner

Quality beef (certainly the grade they serve at Doe's) needs no seasoning. It stands on its own. Only the uninformed think otherwise.

It’s a hopeless cause. Some people...well...just don’t get it.
