What will be your next grill/smoker purchase?

For a long time I have been convinced my next buy will be the Masterbuilt gravity series. Even more so lately now they they came out with the 800 with a griddle insert. I like the convenience of the pellet grill like set it and forget it temp regulation mixed with the fact that you are still using charcoal. Being able to go from 225 to 700+ is nice and it can also be used for those quick mid week burger/hot dog cooks.
A part of me though wants to just go with the classic Weber kettle. I watched a video of someone cooking a brisket on one which led me to looking at the kettle closer and realizing all the different ways to use it. I never realized how many accessories there are out there to go with it either.
So right now I’m swinging between those 2 options but thankfully I have a while until my Oklahoma joe is done.

I have a Performer, which, as you probably already know is the kettle with a table attached to it.
I have a Slow n Sear and a DigiQ temp controller. Those two attachments, along with a Performer, will jack the cost of the Kettle into the price range of the Masterbilt Gravity Series. The number of accessories is amazing. You can turn it into a decent pizza oven, rotisserie, or even Santa Maria style grill.
You cannot beat the versatility of the Kettle. However, cooking space is the biggest limitation, so I have a cheap gasser as an overflow grill, for the rare occasion that I need extra capacity. I could have just bought a second kettle for that purpose, too.
This is important: the reason I enjoy the kettle is I enjoy the process of lighting charcoals, setting up the cooking zones, playing with the temperatures, etc. Experimenting with different cooking techniques. The same things that I enjoy doing are the reasons other people get a Traeger or MB Gravity Series. They DON'T want to fool with it. They want to throw the food on and come back in 2 hours. You have to ask yourself which type of cook are you?

BTW, there are a ton of comparison videos of the kettle vs Traeger/BGE/offset smoker, etc. The kettle holds its own in all of the comparisons, in terms of finished product. It may not be as efficient as a BGE, or as foolproof as a Traeger, but it can cook as good as anything else can.

Look into the RecTeq line. Picked one up recently and super impressive. I went with 700 for extra pellet capacity and 6 year warranty. It is built like a tank, and temp control is perfect after first burn in. Lots of clean smoke produced.
Only issue with it is switching out pellets is not easy, but use apple for most of my cooking so not a big deal to me.

thats where I am. I have a Weber performer and and a Weber Smokey mountain. I smoke in both, but mainly use the Kettle with the slow n sear. I'm not sure if its me, or the grill, but the food that comes off that thing tastes better than anything I've had off a BGE or Kamado that my friends have.
Ive been wanting to pull the trigger on a Weber Summit Charcoal, but its hard when the Kettle puts out such delicious food for minimal price. Anyone own a Weber Summit Charcoal?

I just bought a kettle premium (the 22” variant that sells for $165) for smoking and although I love it, I realized after my first cook that I should have splurged and got a performer model or the 26”.
You’ll need to manage the coals a bit with a kettle, but if you don’t mind doing that, it’s an awesome smoker, and really simple to use.
If you plan on doing full packer briskets I’d recommend the 26” kettle. If not, 22” is fine, but go with the Performer (or master touch if you don’t need the side table).

Been having my Weber Performer since 2009.
If it would ever need to be replaced I’d get another Performer.
Weber Performer
Weber 18” Smokey Mountain
Weber 14” Smokey Mountain
Weber Smokey Joe

This is a very good point. It would be great if they made a 26" Performer. I'd be all over that bad boy...

You think the 4" is worth doubling the price? I'd have a hard time pulling that trigger.

The only difference is having the special grate system included right?

It's only 4 inches, but the size difference is dramatic. I struggle with the size of my 22 inch mastertouch more than I would like.

Struggle as in with quantity (something like hamburgers) or large cuts? Can you do ribs easily on it? The more I've though about it the more I think getting a rib rack would almost be a must unless you just pack ribs on one side and coal on the other.

Count me in the kettle camp as well. Love mine - I have the 22". Don't think the extra space is worth the upcharge. If I want more space I'd get a grill/smoker fit for purpose -like the WSM. Probably going to be my next purchase.

I'm in the process of building a large wooden cabinet smoker with a propane burner for smoking sausage. It's about 3'x 3' x 5'. I only need the temp to get to 160.

The 22" has 380" of surface area for cooking. The 26" hs 530". That 4" makes a huge difference, ask my wife.
