Why did Cafe Rani close? Seemed to do a good business.

Pretty sure the owners had other business ventures going on at the time.

Semolina ?? at least that's what I remember way back when

Semolina also went the way of the dinosaur

edit : ooops, I got Coffee Rani and Café Rani mixed up

speaking of Coffee Rani , anyone know their iced coffee recipe ?

I always thought they used a mixture of condensed milk and shots of espresso which were then added to the iced coffee. For years that was my wife's favorite drink as I've never been able to perfect the secret ingredient. TIA

maybe they used some blend of Torani syrup , I have no clue

Swab's in Brusly (West Baton Rouge Parish). Its claim to fame was its seafood buffet.

Thing I recall most about that place is the family that got busted walking out with gobs of fried seafood in all their women's purses.

i went there once (poor college student) but i think the buffet was like $15 which was ..well..all the money i had at the time.

The thing I remember most about that place was the radio commercial done by the Cajun Chow Hound.

He was a big fat cowboy looking guy with a Hank Williams, Jr. beard and hat. He used to have a radio show and a t.v. gig as a food critic.

He did a commercial for Swab's and he talked about his favorite dish, the crab meat au gratin "with all dat gooey cheese!"

I'll second Peristyle. Thought it was still great at the beginning of Tom Wolfe's ownership. I guess we'll have to add Iris to this list pretty soon. I always enjoyed my meals there.

Mid 90s. The owner of the property shot his foot off with shutting it down and not letting any other restaurant to lease the property. It is close to twenty years of no income at the site.

Visko's in Gretna. I remember going there when I was young and used to like it. Not sure if it was good or not. I think ownership changed later on.

Besides that miss the good seafood places out on the lake. Haven't been to the new ones yet (Brisbi's or Blue Crab).
