looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time.

Not really. An hour is usually plenty. But they simmered much longer since it was self-serve style and I just left them on the stove.

Greens are Surprising how many people are afraid of them.

No crunch in my mustard greens, but they weren't that slimy sort of really soft texture. I don't like that in greens. They get soft in no time. It's sort of hard to make them crunchy because they wilt in seconds when added to a hot pot. I really don't like crunchy green beans. Hericots verts maybe a little crunch, but they get tender pretty quickly. I'd prefer no crunch at all.

My second favorite thing during the holidays was the Italian combo from R&O's. Friend brought one packed to travel and we put it together and heated it up per friend's instructions. At the time, it hit the spot. The meats were tasty and the whole thing just worked on that light crisp Italian sesame seeded poboy bread. I'm having a little craving for a meatball sandwich on muffalatta bread right now and the craving reminded me what a damn fine sandwich that was.

Does R&O's make the bread in house or buy it and, if they buy it, from where do they buy it? Their version of poboy bread with the seeds is so good.

Good thing someone turned them off for you! I bet burned mustards don't smell very good.

I could easily pick something from one of the many local joints I ate at over the holidays but I'm gonna stick to the holiday food. Shrimp mirliton and chateaubriand for me on Christmas. The left over sandwich I made that night was killer. Beef, turkey, pork and the shrimp & mirliton on two pieces of toasted nutty bread.

I made shrimp boudin balls that were really good. My wife said my blackeyed peas were the best I'd ever done. And then I had the Dal Sliders at Whip In Austin that were fantastic.

I've been dieting lately, but a few indulgences over the holidays were well worth it. The best?

1. Mom's sand tarts (buttery pecan cookies rolled in powdered sugar)
2. Mom's pralines
3. Homemade toffee
4. Bayou spiced rum

I didn't go crazy and eat much of these things, but those few bites and sips were delicious.

Christmas morning at my mom's. My dad's bourbon milk punch with a piece of my grandmother's coffee cake. RIP my two favorite people.

Thanks, BroCo, Gris and Otis. It really is the little things that matter.

So many memories, so little time.
