I'd rather sip on a "good" tequila neat. It's like mixing a good bourbon. Why do it?
But if you want to mix, I'm a big fan of palomas if you don't want a margarita. Just get some grapefruit soda (Jarritos is good if you can find it) and mix with some lime juice. Turns out great.

About 8 years ago in Houston I had a drink called an El Diablo. It was tequila, lime juice, ginger beer, and creme de cassis. It was very good.
