Go to a Tastee Donuts and get a "Mackenzie's" King Cake ... THAT'S what a king cake is and should be ... a sweet bread/brioche dough with maybe a hint of cinnamon ... places like Wal-Mart and other chains that have NO business pawning garbage off as a King Cake have bastardized the name, and over-done the whole thing by simply using cinnamon rolls, stuffing it with cream cheese and other goop, and pouring way too much icing over the top. A lot of mom and pop donut shops who are not true "bakeries" are guilty as well, pawning off giant donuts as King Cakes. If you don't know the answer to your question, then chances are that you've never had a true King Cake, my friend.

I just bought a cinnamon King Cake the other day from a local bakery (usually I get a fruit/cream cheese filling), and I seriously couldn't taste much difference, if any, between it and a cinnamon roll. I'll stick with the fruit or praline fillings.

ETA: I've never had one from a New Orleans bakery.

Not being from this area, I'm certainly not an expert on King Cakes, but of the ones I've had, the dough is similar to that of a cinnamon roll. Like I said, though, I suppose I've never had an authentic one, if there's such a thing, or do different places in SELA have different ideas of what that is? I would really like to try THE authentic King Cake, if there is one that's widely considered to be the original.

This. In 2013, you are correct. 95% of the king cakes out there are cinnamon rolls. I think the biggest sin is that these grocery stores typically get in frozen cinnamon roll dough and convert it into a king cake. It's not like they are even making them from scratch. (I'm basing this on a few articles I've read detailing particular stores' king cakes) Then people argue over which stores are the best. I'm sure some stores are still making dough from scratch, so I'm unfairly painting with a broad brush. However, scratch made is the exception. Real brioche, or traditional french style almond filled is the exceptional exception.

A bad king cake tastes like a dry cinnamon roll, a good one, stuffed with cool shite, is a tasty concoction.

Have you ever eaten a king cake? You should know the difference if so.

You're trying way too hard with this New Orleans/Mardi gras shite

KC's used to create a lot of stress for me. During MG season I always felt that we needed KC at the house. Than one day me & my female were discussing how KC's were ok tasting but not special at all.

So now I'll just purchase 1 KC from Ralph's during MG season and have done with it. No more KC angst.

I've made homemade cinnamon rolls and homemade king cakes. King cakes are a completely different animal.

Now if we're just going by what's sold in grocery stores, then yeah, it's just a cinnamon roll.

King Cakes are what every cinnamon roll wants to be when it grows up.

Am I the only person who doesn't like McKenzie's king cakes? Every time I've gotten one from Tastee's, it's stale and the sugar just falls off. It's like eating a hunk of stale bread with sugar. Not a fan of it personally. I still think Randazzo's has the best king cake, although they can be famous for glopping on too much frosting.
