I just don't get your point in this thread...

Do you feel insecure because of what Mike is cooking? And, FWIW, I believe Mike's brother is an actual chef, so...

TigahRag makes a valid point, although I think he called out the wrong person if his brother is in fact a chef. These are some very impressive dishes being made. Kudos to all. Why not you guys invite a college kid procrastinating for finals come and have a bite?

With that said-my parents went on a Mediterranean cruise for two weeks, so I for the first time in awhile, had no opportunity to spoil my mom...so no gifts and Little Caesar's.

This being my first post, I doubt I'll get too much respect here, but this is some funny stuff.

First of all, total respect to the OP for such an ambitious menu. I sucessfully pulled off grilled ribeyes and twice-baked potatoes but that's about as far as I can go at this point.

But Rag has a point as far as some of the posts on this board in general go. Sometimes simple food is just the way to go. If one has the ability to make a restaurant-style meal at home then by all means, go for it, but not everyone has the capability or desire to go that far.

dude .. I was joking with the guy .. if people get upset about stuff like this on a freaking message board food board, that's crazy .. why in the hell would you take this seriously ? do you really thing I was "calling out" mike ? I was poking fun at all the amateur chefs here acting like there's a food network camera in their kitchen .. some of you food snobs need to genuinely get over yourselves ..

Eating well and taking time to prepare a great meal =/= being a food snob

no .. a horrific sense of humor and an inability to laugh at yourself when we are talking about the ultra sensitive topic that is preparing and eating food does, though ..

To me, it seemed like you were being a bit condescending. Who cares if people try out new, out of the ordinary, and difficult to prepare dishes? I like trying things out that I wouldn't normally do because cooking is what I do for money as well as something I enjoy. That doesn't make me a food snob

And I laugh at myself all the time

We had ribeyes for lunch that required an infrared thermometer, cast iron skillet on grill, real butter with homemade bleu cheese sauce with a brandy base and cream. Now for dinner I opened cans, browned a pound of 80/20 beef and made taco soup. So am I a food snob or lazy cook?

Come on, don't act ignorant.

We all know Mike is a bit passionate about food. I don't need to link one of his multi-paragraphed rants for evidence. It is not a shock that Mike took offense to your comments. You knew he would, thus your comments. It's your MO.

I think Mike should be commended for having a passion for something. People aren't passionate about enough things these days. It should be encouraged, not mocked.

I think to answer your orginal question...if it is a simple dinner there is no need to write about it(I don't write about my bowl of grape nut dinners), I do not think the people on this board cook like that every night but on occasion...why not, I think the talent is here and if you are going to go all out might as well write about it and give the rest of us ideas

Hamburgers, boudin, and bratwursts.

Or I can find a food thesaurus and sound much fancier like Mike.

no .. i get that .. but some of them claim to cook like this every night .. sorta like the "what was your ACT score" or "were you an all-state athlete in high school" threads on the OT ... it's the same game of one upmanship that you see on any of these boards actually ..

Sound like an entree, but in the end, beets are just root vegetables like potatoes, and fish is fish isn't it? Both can be had at the grocery store if you want them. I really don't know why that is seen as so fancy smancy.

I don't post here often, and I would just as soon spend a day playing golf, but I'm old enough to have developed a very good sense of timing and kitchen know-how so that I can pull off a really ambitious meal for a special ocassion. The once-in-a-while day spent cooking is actually very rewarding when the results are so appreciated.
