What do people mean when they say “There’s no such thing as crawfish dip in New Orleans”?

I’ve heard this a few times, and I can’t wrap my mind around what it’s supposed to even mean. Can any of you shed some light on it?

They're asking you for crack

Crawfish dip is for people who don't know how to boil.

People won’t serve you a sauce to dip your crawfish in at a boil

I’ve lived in NOLA my whole life and have never heard that before ever.
I’ve also never heard of crawfish dip.

Crawfish prices never dip. They only go up.

Been in New Orleans for 30 years. Never heard that phrase.

When you say crawfish dip, do you mean like one of those cream cheese based Cajun seasoned crawfish dips they sell in groceries for chips or like a cocktail sauce for dipping boiled crawfish?
I assumed the former until I saw the comments.

Either it or butter (or both) are a standard part of nearly every crawfish offering in SWLA.
If you’ve never had it, you could say it’s the inspiration for Cane’s sauce.
I’ve never made it.

If I tell you a roster dips snuff, you better look under his wing for the can.

The frick is crawfish dip?
A blend of Mayo and ketchup, with minced onion and creole seasoning. Very popular in Terrebonne/Lafourche

If you have to dip crawfish in anything, you are a miserable failure at boiling crawfish.

Never heard this saying.
But yes, crawfish dip is for women who see other women doing it, so they want to do it too. It's just stupid for crawfish. Not too bad for the potatoes though.
The last thing I want to do with my boiled crawfish tails is dredge them in mayo and ketchup.

Listen to the city folk telling the Cajuns what to do with crawfish. Hilarious.
Dip goes great with crawfish, but it’s even better for all the sides.

To be fair, I'm kind of confused on what a woman is these days....
