Hadn't been in a few years and it was a buddy's birthday so me and two other friends took him out for a giant arse steak.

I got stuck ordering a steak for myself. The birthday boy wanted a filet and my two other friends were in collusion and split a 2 1/2 lb porterhouse. I got the 2 lb ribeye.

I like Doe's due to the casual nature. No frills really and people from all walks of life were in there. A table across from us looked like a bunch of attorneys after work. Another table was a plant worker in his FRCs and his wife/gf. Another table was some young couple covered in tattoos. Good time.

We started with the tamales and they were very good. The chili it came with was also really nice as well. Good stuff.

I got the traditional salad and it was fine. Nothing to write home about. Two friends got a chopped blue cheese wedge salad and that looked really good. I chose...poorly.

My steak was beautifully cooked and was absolutely delicious. Rich, buttery, and super tender. I ate maybe about 1/3 of it before tapping out. I could have pushed myself, but would have hated myself for it.

The fries it came with were forgettable, but I wasn't going to eat them anyway. I also ordered a side of creamed spinach, which I sent back to the kitchen because it was too soupy and too sweet. Not good at all. I felt justified when the table next to me sent their's back as well.

The drop biscuits are good. Resemble donuts without sugar, but were good with honey and butter.

Waitress (who was a smokeshow, no pics, sorry) brought out a piece of chocolate eclair cake for the birthday boy and we all had some. It was really good stuff.

All in all, everyone enjoyed their meal, and for a Tuesday night, Doe's was pretty busy. I recommend getting a steak there, and splitting it for sure.

(not my pic, but pretty identical to my meal)

Went a few weeks ago as well.
Pretty much had the exact same experience as you.

Steak and tamales/chili were great...but the sides all desperately need some work.

Nice. I am not a big fan of their tamales, but that may be just me.

Try the fried shrimp as an app. Trust me on that.

The restaurant was built on good, big steaks, Italian salads, baked potatoes and fries.

It sticks close to its roots...but the one in Mecca can fry the hell out of some large shrimp.

I ate at the one in Paducah, KY a few years ago. It was a darn good steak.

My steak was absolutely great. I know Doe's can be a "polarizing" restaurant on this board, but I can't say anything about the cut of meat I had.

I also got stuck ordering single on my last trip a couple weeks ago with clients. I got the 1.5 tbone and due to many apps, my doggy box gave me 2 more meals and a bone gnawing the next couple days.
Never had a bad experience at Does. My clients got a kick out of sitting beside Uncle Si at the next table.

Because you didn't like a side of spinach?

I dig the place and can appreciate it for what it is, as well. I've been to the one in BR a few times and the original in Greenville once.

He didn't like the fries either. If they tasted like the photo looked, I can see why.

Salad was meh.
Spinach was terrible.
Biscuits were okay.
Fries were bad.

Steak was A+ - which was the star so glad it was the best
Dessert was excellent.
Tamales were good.

They looked exactly like the picture. Overcooked and bland.

Fair enough. I just didn't read the salad and biscuits as criticisms at all, and that the fries you didn't care about.

Like I said, and like I got out of your mixed review, it's a place to appreciate for what it is.

I think they put out the best steak in Baton Rouge. I like the fries well enough. I really love that house salad and the dressing. My favorite thing is to sop up the dressing with those good drop biscuits.
I keep on meaning to go over there one night when my wife is working and make a meal out of the tamales.

I am in agreement that steak and tamales are their best offerings.

I have had steaks that were much too large (maybe every steak I ever had was much too big), but I never had a bad one.

I have always enjoyed the tamales also. And their shrimp are memorable. As if I need shrimp when going to Doe's.

Haven't eaten there in a couple years. Of the 3 times I went, they turned my medium rare porterhouse into well done shoe leather every time. Swore I'd never go back.

We had our Christmas party there last year and everything was great from the signature cocktails, salads, trout, steaks, rolls, mushrooms, and bread pudding.

I presume you sent the steaks back to be corrected?

Friends got a porterhouse cooked to medium rare just fine. You're saying all three times you went they cooked a med rare steak to well done? I doubt that.

I don't believe for a single minute that they managed to turn a 20+ ounce piece of meat into well done after you ordered MR. Not once, but 3 different times.
