This is legitimately saddening. I remember Anchor Steam and Old Foghorn being some of the first craft beers I ever tried circa 2006.

Same here. I had my first Anchor Steam in 1992. This is truly sad.

Just last week they announced cessation of distribution to markets outside California. Sad to hear they are closing up.
Sounds like a combination of things.
1) a lot of new competition
2) Parent company that bought them out does what they will inevitably do.
3) I don't know how any business can survive in San Fransisco. So expensive.

Truly a bummer. Anchor Steam was a go-to after work beer for me on Fridays for a while. I also enjoyed the Liberty Ale.
This was the main problem IMO. After the sale, it became more difficult to find where I live, and when I did, it didn't taste the same.
They also changed the label to some shitty modern, minimalistic design that made it look like Twisted Tea, which likely didn't help.

F*CK! Their "Special Ale" (Xmas Ale) was always one of my favorite and I looked forward to it every year. I never found it last year. Maybe this is part of the reason. Smaller production.

I have a love/hate relationship with many of Stone's beers, but I certainly do not want to see them go under. They were a very creative brewery.

Damn. Anchor steam was a very solid beer. I also love their Christmas beers. I still have some in the pantry from years back, aging.

I only find about 3 stone beers around town now. One of their hazy offerings, arrogant bastard (at total wine) and rarely, Stone IPA.
I miss Ruination, Sublimely Self Righteous (they had a comeback last fall), and Levitation (discontinued).
Their Berlin brewery disaster seemed to have damaged them a bit. Greg Koch is also a strange dude and comes off like an arse.

It was the first outside of Abita that I ever had, that I actually enjoyed.
Its got to be pretty hard to operate in the heart of San Francisco, with property costs and taxes and employees. I'm surprised they didn't try moving their operation outside of San Fran, to a more business friendly area near by. Just have a tap room in the city or just loose the tap room all together.

Total Wine in Metairie used to carry the Buenaveza Salt and Lime lager. It was alright. Cool can. I need to check if they still have it on the shelf.

They did a rerelease of it this year in select states. luckily Ohio was one of them so got a six pack and went down memory lane.
ETA right now I can get a Stone Variety pack here that has original IPA, Hazy, Delicious IPA and FML Double Hazy IPA. All are very good.

Anchor Steam is what got me into craft beer. This is heartbreaking.
On the flip side, they own the trademark to "steam beer," so maybe we can all stop calling them California Commons now.

I never liked Anchor Steam at Chimes. I had a fresh pour at the brewery a few years back. It’s amazing.
