I realize it's difficult to list all of the great restaurants in New Orleans. My buddy was asking me the best places to eat based on taste and experience. He was asking for a top 5. My dad mentioned Commanders of course but also Irene's, Cochon, Meril, and Mr. B's. What do you guys think? He wants a knockout meal and wants to impress his wife.

Did your dad mean Emeril's instead of Meril? Not sure Meril is a top 5. Put Restaurant August on your list.

Cochon and Meril have no place in that discussion

Impossible to answer.
August
Herbsaint
Coquette
Shaya
La Petite

Thank you for the suggestions. His main goals are experience, location, and awesome food. They've eaten at Comannders, Mr. B's, Cochon, etc. Is there somewhere in the same realm as Comannders based on taste and atmosphere?

Restaurant August is the best if you are looking for something similar to Commander's.

Completely agree.

Meril hasn't been open long enough to be ranked in my opinion and the menu is not such that I would place it in the Commander's category.
Does your friend want any certain type of food?
I would suggest looking at August and R'evolution. For R'evolution, I would request a table overlooking the Royal Sonesta patio. Make sure he doesn't get a table in the kitchen area.
We had a fabulous meal at Emeril's several months ago. I don't think it's a top 5, but it's excellent. I think there's more atmosphere in the area on the left side of the restaurant in the wine room area.
I've had wonderful meals at Delmonico and love the atmosphere.

In the top 5? lol. All of those except Cochon wouldn't even be in the 15-20.
Impossible question, but my current top 5 places I really like (not necesarily the "best"):
Shaya
Peche
Coquette
August
Herbsaint
most "best" lists will be something like:
August
R'evolution
Shaya
Commander's
and the like

Irenes probably has even less a place, if you are really trying to name the "Top 5 Restaurants in New Orleans." Although, if it's just one person's list of "5 favorite places" who am I to argue?

Flavor and experience, Square Root belongs on list of impressive places.
Commanders
August
Square Root
Peche
Shaya
But if really wanting to impress, look up threads here for best chefs / kitchen tables for the most unique experiences.

This is good advice as well. R'evolution doesn't get as much love on here for some reason, but the one meal my wife and I had there was fabulous all around.

Top 5 in New Orleans is almost impossible to list. Everyone's taste and preference are different and there are so many to choose from.
Here are some that won't dissapoint.
Shaya
Brigtsen's
Bayona
Silk Road
GW Fins
If you are wanting an awesome meal in a romantic building.. Bayona is great.
