Did you taste the dish?

Judges said it was bland for a typical New Orleans dish. That doesnt mean the dish was bland.

Good point. They didn't seem to like it much and i thought that was odd, too. I can't imagine him putting out tasteless shrimp and grits dish. Maybe he didn't and they were wrong or it was personal taste or their expectations, as you point out, were for some highly spiced dish.

I think Gail said the grits had a lot of butter.

I noticed this too. I thought Justin and the other chefs who lost were foolish in cooking in a more gourmet fashion. They were cooking for musicians, not other chefs.

While Justin's dish didn't look like "traditional" s&g, it certainly could be just as enjoyable.

To be fair, the judges werent the musicians; it was Sue, Tom, Padma, and Gail. The editing in that show is so immense, its hard to put any stock on how the dishes actually fared other than who won and who went home with knives packed.

I'm only watching this show because it's the New Orleans version. I doubt I'll watch the series again, after this. I hadn't watched it before.

I understand that, but the vast majority of the "audience" were musicians. If you step out of the comfort zone of the majority, you run the risk of creating a bad impression of your food.

Rightly or wrongly.

Meh, there was some editing in there to keep the suspense of who was the losing team. None of them said they didn't like the dish, just that it wasn't what they were expecting because it had no sauce. And the musicians were thrown off by shrimp and grits with no sauce.

In fact, during the tasting Tom commented that all of the team's dishes were delicious.

When I questioned how Justin could make a bland Shrimp & Grits dish last night with his background, the wife (MHNBPF) said "they might not like yours",

and I said

"Well, what the hell do they know?"

The episode two weeks ago, a few of the dining companions of the judges thought the stuffed squash blossom was the weakest of the three finalists.

In seasons past, people have been sent home for simplifying their dish for their "audience."

Funny. I have heard the judges say, "Cook in your comfort zone with what we give you."

Evidently they believe the chefs are not staying with what they know, except maybe for Nina, who seems to be staying close to what she does well.

I like Justin and think Nina will win.

Nina's winner?

I thought it was good but my goodness, not very creative. Squash blossoms are almost an Amuse.

I was surprised the squash blossom won. I didn't think it was creative. It was more obvious than creative. I can't recall the stuffing, but it wasn't all that out there, as I recall.

I think it was a standard Ricotta style stuffing?

Yeah, that's pretty much been a staple of this show every season. "Cook your food."

i was happy to see patty go home. i thought she was a weak chef. I thought the sick guy might get sent home but i think they gave him a pass. Patty's dish was just weak, then add that it was bland and boring. she's been skating by.

I hate how she was always on the verge of tears. Quickfire was stupid imo. A guy i may have overlooked is the dude that used to cook at The French Laundry. He did the roasted veggies. Dude has skills to make it to the finals.

Stuffed/Fried squash blossom is the most overused "new and creative" fad.

Yeah that dude has sort of appeared out of nowhere. They do that ever season, just hide some cook in the shadows the first few episodes, then all of a sudden you learn he was the sous at some world class spot for years. The most notable was Kevin from Top Chef DC.

The inside of the squash had cream cheese and roasted eggplant.

I thought the quickfire was pretty cool. Often in a kitchen a cook will need to finish a dish someone else started for some reason or another. But yes some people got hosed more than others. And I highly doubt that one of Kermit's favorite foods is tofu.

It's whatever the judges (err...producers) use to drive the narrative...one person will be ripped for not cooking what they know, and the very next person will be ridiculed for staying in their comfort zone.
