Top Chef 2021; Starts April 1
Posted by Twenty 49 on 4/1/21 at 1:52 pm35
Top Chef 18, filmed in a bubble in Portland, premieres April 1 with a supersized episode at 7 central on Bravo.
15 all new cheftestants will be judged by Padma, Tom and Gail, plus an “elite rotating judging and dining panel” made up of only Top Chef alumni.
Woke warning: According to Bravo, “The chefs will be put to the test in a variety of new challenges this season, including celebrating PDX’s Pan-African cuisine, feeding hundreds of frontline workers, a surf and turf elimination challenge honoring the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and crabbing on the Oregon Coast in a tribute to culinary icon and Oregonian James Beard. They will also visit some of Oregon’s most famous locations, including the Hood River Fruit Loop and Tillamook Creamery. This season’s Restaurant Wars will be unlike any other as the teams must execute a micro-restaurant concept with a cohesive seven-course tasting menu.”
Covid-inspired production changes included curbside pickup at Whole Foods and the exclusion of challenges involving large dinners and crowds. Good. We've seen enough shopping scrambles and banquet halls.
Here are the contestants:
—Brittanny Anderson, Richmond, Va.
—Avishar Barua, Columbus, Ohio
—Dawn Burrell, Houston
—Gabe Erales, Austin, Texas
—Nelson German, Oakland, Calif.
—Byron Gomez, Aspen, Colo.
—Sasha Grumman, Houston
—Roscoe Hall, Birmingham, Ala.
—Sara Hauman, Portland, Ore.
—Kiki Louya, Detroit
—Maria Mazon, Tucson, Ariz.
—Shota Nakajima, Seattle
—Gabriel Pascuzzi – Portland, Ore.
—Jamie Tran – Las Vegas
—Chris Viaud – Milford, N.H.

SO excited. It's my favorite show.
I fully expect some wokeness, because Portland, but I hope it doesn't get in the way of the food, which should be the star. It will be interesting to see the Covid adaptations. If nothing else, it will be a season like no other.

I’m excited to see it back. Last season was the first time I also watched Last Chance Kitchen and I plan to do that again.

Hopefully the rioters stole some of their food they were trying to cook. Jk
I love this. Final table I felt like was on par with this show or better
I’m glad top chef was able to make money while some businesses were not allowed to in Portland

I find it supremely annoying when politics find their way into my "entertainment". I expect it, but I don't have to like it.

Usually I make fun of people who see politics in everything, but I actually lean towards agreeing with it here. Last two seasons have been pretty over the top with the progressiveness. More to do with the chefs chosen than the production I think.
Either way I’m pumped, love Top Chef. And good to see my girl Gail. She touched my arm and laughed at my joke at a party in Charleston a few years ago. Wife knows that’s still in the spank bank I’m sure.

I met her at Austin Food + Wine a few years back and she is even more beautiful and elegant in real life. Also very kind. Total woman crush.

Snoozefest.
It lacks the charm of Top Chefs past. Nobody memorable, challenges were boring.
Not a fan of the kitchen. The neon is super distracting. Looks like we might get some Stew Room footage this season, though!
Blais, your Quickfire hair made me want to die.
Loved seeing Dale Talde and Kwame!

The Daily Beast just posted a long interview with Gail Simmons. I've heard them say that judge's table takes a long time, but damn:
‘It’s Not Personal!’: ‘Top Chef’ Judge Gail Simmons Tells All
quote:
There used to be years where Judges’ Table would take through the night into the morning. Especially finales. I can count at least three or four finales where we would finish eating at like eight o'clock, nine o'clock at night, go to Judges’ Table, let’s say, starting at 10 o'clock at night. And we would debate until seven in the morning. In Puerto Rico, season four, we had to stop production during the finale Judges’ Table because the light was coming up, the sun was rising, the roosters were crowing, and we had to shut down so that our lighting department could switch around the lighting because it was lit for nighttime and it wasn’t night anymore. There are pictures of me literally taking a nap at the Judges’ Table.
So they used to be agonizing and they’re still incredibly hard. And they do take hours and hours when they’re boiled down to 15 minutes of airtime. But we’ve gotten a lot more efficient at it because we all are sort of on the same page about what we’re looking for and the challenge. So what used to be eight hours or seven hours of Judges’ Table at finales now is four or five. But we take it seriously. And we have never regretted a decision that we’ve made because we make sure we’re unanimous and we talk it out.

I’ve always loved the show, but I’m bowing out.
At some point I need to stop looking the other way.
If someone is good with the transgender thing for their children then it’s their business.
But when they start saying people don’t deserve to be parents if they aren’t for it, it’s different. The slope is very slippery.
I won’t be able to enjoy it listening to that communist twat.

This a million times. The whole transgender thing weirds the frick out of me. But hey you do you. Just don't force it on me or tell me to agree, like, support it. This is the disturbing trend these days.
Exactly. These people are mentally ill and I won’t give them the time of day anymore. frick these people
How hypocritical of them to be able to make money during the pandemic but so many restaurants were forced to close during the same time.

Spoiler alert.
The guy who was the first to get kicked off had no luck at all.
First voted out, lost the coin toss at Last Chance Kitchen, and lost his first round in Last Chance Kitchen. And so much for wokeness helping. He is a black employee at a famous black-owned restaurant, and he got beat by a white gal.

I haven’t seen the last chance kitchen yet, but he is a pit master, not a fine dining chef.
He picked the wrong competition to join.
Saying that, I like that Kwame is going to be a regular this season. I worked with him in downtown BR when he was a waiter. Never knew he would become a TV chef

The second episode was wayyy better than the first.
I LOVED the QF. Loved it.
I thought the Elimination challenge was interesting, and I liked the twist.
Shota is my early favorite. I like Gabe, too...I have that Austin bias, so that may be why, but you can tell he's got chops.
Gabriel gets on my damn nerves, but he's talented so I'm afraid we'll be stuck with him for awhile...kind of a Phillip Frankland Lee situation where I want to set fire to my TV everytime he's on it.

I like Shota, too. I’m also interested to see how far Sarah can go. No one is bugging me too much, yet, although I see why Gabriel is working your nerves.
Richard Blais’s QF order was just cruel!

Shota will be this seasons fan favorite.
Maybe it's just me, but I like Gabriel. I hope he goes far.
