Top 5 New Orleans Restaurants

My friends and I debate this list all the time. Or at least try to discuss it. Usually I can rattle off my top three very easily, but I always blank on #4 to #5 and fill it in with some half hearted response.
1. Gautreau's
Ambience. Decor. Food. Service. Elusiveness. This restaurant has it all. If I could pick one restaurant to dine at for the rest of my life this would be it.
2. La Petite Grocery
Not as elusive or subdued as Geautreau's but feels in a similar vein. Less stuffy and more social. I actually enjoy eating at the bar. I believe the burger used to come with an egg on it standard. Then I believe it was an option listed on the menu. Now it is no longer there. Order the burger and ask for a medium boiled egg (or over easy depending on your style).
3. Boucherie
I can't ever tell you what it was that I have eaten from there. I just remember it is always good. Valentine's Day one year they had their prix fixe menu and it was something with carbonated grapes. And the owner had just come back from Norway and traded Abita kegs for Norwegian beer kegs. It's always a cheerful high energy outing very social with good food that above all else is creative and intriguing.
4-5
Here is where the wheels come off. I can't decide or feel strongly enough about any other restaurant to cement it into spots 4 and 5. Some I've eaten at once and I remember enjoying it but can't say with enough conviction it is "one of the best".
- August
- Restaurant R'evolution
- Banana Blossom
- Lilette
- Clancy's
- Patois
- Arnaud's

Im generally with you on this list with one exception, Clancys. Extremely overhyped. Decent entrees but the sides are mushy veggies and piping bag mashed potatoes.
I'd put Lisette over Boucherie.
I know sushi is it's own list, but the city's sushi offerings have improved dramatically over the last few years: Yakuza House, Nagomi, Yonashi.

Arnaud's used to be one of my favorites, but the last few times we went we were unhappy. Food was inconsistent and service terrible. Haven't been back in a few years, so maybe it's been resolved since then.
August might be the best fine dining. Unfotunately Besh is a POS, so I don't go anymore. Make no mistake about it; he's still involved with these restaurants via proxy.
Brigtsen's needs to be on the list in discussion, as does Adolfo's (although I heard he died, so I'm not sure if it's still up to the same level).
I do agree with your overall list, and the poster above is absolutely wrong about Clancy's. What a terrible take.

Love that you mentioned Banana Blossom. That place is amazing. Not as fancy/upscale as everything else, but still great food.
GW Fins' Scalibut may be my favorite dish in NOLA. GW Fins also has some amazing appetizers (lobster dumplings, spicy tuna tacos)

August seems to me like it never blows me away. I went literally four nights ago. Had the duck three ways or something. The sliced duck breast was tough and dry like it had been sitting out for a few hours.
I have never been to Brigstens but have heard wonderful things maybe that is next on my list.
Never heard of Adolfo’s.
Haven’t been to Arnauds in like a decade.
Went it Clancy’s last year and found it mediocre to be quite honest. I actually preferred the food at Patois.

Coquette?
I sort of prefer it to La Petit Grocery.

Adolfo’s is great. Revolution is my favorite in the city but it’s hard to compare totally different styles. I also really like Chophouse for steaks.

I think this answer is really going to depend on what you are looking for in a restaurant.
Places like AVO and Costera are higher on my list right now, but they aren't traditional New Orleans restaurants.
Gautreaus is certainly good, but nothing on their menu seems fresh or inventive. The drinks are very traditional. The vibe is old New Orleans families and their same routine for 50 years. That works for people, but it doesn't put it at the top of the list for me.

Sadly I think they are.
And that place doesn't need to be mentioned in a top 5 thread. Or even a top 100 thread.

Seems like I remember my mom and dad liking that place when I was a kid.

Come F&D board, OP has 6 downvotes and there are 5 posts about Mike Anderson's
Very disappointing, this thread has potential

It's so weird. It was an interesting attempt at a topic. I don't necessarily agree with his choices, but appreciate his opinions and reasoning. Why the flurry of multiple downvotes? Is it people thinking the topic sucks or just not liking his opinions? Grrrrr!!!

Not sure why the downvotes as it seems innocent enough.
Its a weird post in which he is trying to rank the best restaurants in the city without any real substantive reasoning....LPG is No. 2 but he only discusses having the burger at the bar....there is no restaurant here named "La Boucherie" and he can't tell us what he had there.
