Tio Javi’s (old Ninfa’s)

We went last night and were so disappointed. This has been our favorite Mexican place for years. They changed the tortilla chips that they have been using for years and years. The new ones are much thicker, heavier and almost over cooked, very dark. For years they have had those light and airy ones that are so crunchy.
Then my wife ordered the fajita burrito which she has gotten for 20 years and it did not taste the same. They used a ton of very cheap tasting nacho queso in the burrito and the chicken was dried out. She ordered the black beans on the side and they were straight up out of a can and microwaved. Unseasoned, hard and watery beans. She even had me try them bc she said they weren’t good. Very disappointed. Has anyone else found that their food has gone down or we just there on a “off” night? Last time we went was a couple of months ago and it was great. Not sure what to think.

The only thing I order there is the skillet queso with shrimp. It's so damn good. With the fresh flour tortillas...look out.
Your order does sound like it was shitty. I think Blue Corn has the best overall Mexican entree choice and execution in town.

We eat there often and have not noticed any negative changes. I get the beef fajita burrito all the time. Tell the manager about the chips .

When is the last time you’ve gone?

Do they still have the $1 Taco and $7 pitcher of margarita deal after 8:00pm?

That would be a good reason to go. I never found Ninfa’s to be that good, so we’ve never been to Tio Javi’s.

It’s not on their dinner menu, but they do a pineapple chicken adobo entree for lunch that is amazing. Its 2 big chicken breasts grilled over a bed of fajita onions, topped with grilled pineapple. Comes with this very tasty cilantro lime rice and some sautéed zucchini. It’s enough for 2 people for like $16.
Edit: Whoops, I didnt realize we were shitting on Tio Javis. I dont have anything bad to say.

That has not been my experience. I go every month or two for lunch and always find it good.

Old school ninfa’s with piñatas on the ceiling was the shite. Nondo was running it and it was on point.

We get some takeout tacos from there every now and then. Hard to beat the price they have for a dozen ground beef tacos (as recently as late May / early June they were $18 for way more meat and condiments than are needed for 12 tacos), and we like the chips and dip options.
But I really came to reply about Blue Corn. For the money, Blue Corn is our family fave Mexican place. We love it.

Damn I’ve been going there pretty often for the last year and really enjoy the food every time. They had a rough start a few years ago, but it’s a great spot now IMO.

The Proprietor who owns the Ruth’s Chris steakhouse on Constitution bought the Tio Javis and allegedly revamped the menu with higher quality menu items. My wife and I would go to Ninfa’s regularly when it was Ninfa’s when we lived in BR and the $1 taco and pitcher deal was very legit.
Overall, Tio Javi’s is pretty expensive for BR Mexican food.

But still way cheaper and better than superior

It’s been a few years, but I used to LOVE Ninfa’s green salsa.

Give them the benefit of the doubt. Staffing is so bad right now that just about every restaurant is getting their teeth kicked in. Limit your party size, try not to give a special order, and have patience.
