Sushi Yama kind of aggravated me this weekend

First off, this has nothing to do with their food as they are my favorite sushi restaurant in town. Their lack of transparency is what did me in.
This past Saturday, around 6:00 PM, I called to place a to-go order. I was greeted with a busy tone. No worries. It's happened before. I hung up and tried a few more time and still, the same busy tone.
My wife asked if it were possible they were closed for some reason. I doubted that so I went on their website and facebook page...nothing about being closed.
I decided to just go and place the order in person. I didn't mind waiting in my truck listening to podcast or something while waiting.
I arrived and there are about 8 people sitting outside, waiting on tables. I walk to the hostess and tell her I'd like to place a to-go order.
"Hello. I tried calling y'all several times to place an order but it kept going to busy."
"Yeah, we took the phone off the hook. We are too busy right now for to-go orders."
"Well how long would it take to place one now?"
"We aren't really doing them but it would be over an hour and a half, and I understand that you won't want to wait that long."
She was correct in that there was no way I was waiting that long. I thanked her and left, pissed off under my mask but sure not to take it out on the hostess.
I am happy Sushi Yama is so busy during this pandemic that they can basically refuse money. Most restaurants are not that fortunate. However it's 2020. I feel they should keep their customers updated on social media or even an automated phone message that to-go orders were being paused.
Ava Street Cafe was delicious though, and the lesson learned is to order from Yama when they open going forward.

You are right. They probably should have called you and let you know they weren't doing to go orders.

It’s actually pretty common for them to not take to go orders.

They don't do social media. We order sushi yama almost every friday. We know what to expect. The order will be ready anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. If they never pick up the phone, well they aren't taking take out orders. We've been told many times, no takeout today because they are too busy. Order by 530/6 and you are usually good to go, though.

Why would they have their actual sit-down patrons wait an hour for their food to accommodate takeout orders? If you were dining in and they were prioritizing takeouts, you’d be pissed. Rightfully so.
Edit - I see you are just aggravated they didn’t update, not that they weren’t taking orders. Ignore the above.

just order sushi from one of the other 100 sushi places right around there, Karen?

It is a common practice for sushi restaurants to stop answering the phone when they are too busy to handle to go orders.

Been eating and ordering from them for years and never ran into this before. New to me.

Yeah that’s the plan next time. Will just order early and put it in the fridge until ready to eat

It’s 2020. Am automated message on their system isn’t that hard but you know that and you’re just being a try-hard.

This is not what he's saying and you know it. Most businesses that are not able to handle ordinary requests in 2020 will put something out on Twitter, Facebook, or instagram that they are busy and not accepting take-out orders.
Right now google maps is so screwed up in terms of what is opened or closed, it would help if restaurants would take a minute an review all this. It could mean that many patrons are not visiting due to false "temp closed" notices that are everywhere.

Rock n Sake has a good system in place to let you know they’re too busy. They should follow.

Well, hopefully this thread is a public service to all: when sushi restaurants get busy, they stop answering the phone and taking to go orders.

Seriously? Restaurants, especially those with a primarily sit-down business, have limited capacity to produce food in a pretty narrow time window. That's just the nature of the business--even moreso for a sushi restaurant, where most of the food is assembled to order and cannot be premade.
Obviously, Sushi Yama is successful and doesn't want or need to make its takeout operation more efficient--whether by social media or phone messages. It's the owner's business: they're free to not do takeout at all, or to do so on a limited basis.
Since when, especially in the midst of an incredibly difficult time for restaurants, do we expect an independently owned business to operate like a fast food joint or a mega-chain restaurant backed by social media, an app, online ordering, etc?

Oh how horrible it is to discuss food related topics on the food and drink board.
And I stand by my thread 100%. They should let people know these things but it’s their business and they can do what they want. I’ll know for next time.
Still doesn’t mean you know how to use the term “Karen” you try hard dip shite

Does this extend to other restaurants or is it just a made up rule for sushi restaurants? I seriously doubt they all do this.

This makes no sense. Smaller restaurants than sushi yama utilize social media and takeout ordering systems online.
They just don’t want to and that’s on them. Their business seems to be booming regardless.
