Sweet cornbread is for Yankees.

Hot water. I don't think I even had Jiffy until I was in my 20s. My mom made regular non-sweet and Mexican cornbread in cast iron more, but hot water was my favorite.

Cast iron skillet and it’s not even close

2 or 3, depending on what I'm eating.
That photo of 3 is a good example of how I want it to look. Never tried frying in butter. Might try some ghee to get the smoke point up. I also like it thinner with the lacy edges.
Add some cracklin' to #2 and take it up a notch.

I often make Mexican cornbread, but cook it on a cast iron griddle or comal. It spreads out and while thicker than fry bread, is still pretty thin, which gives you more crust area.

Yep. I love jiffy with red beans.
Also, I can smell my Granny's kitchen in picture 3.

I don't really care. I'll eat any of them. But I'll probably be much more interested in what it is being served with than the cornbread.
Also, it bugs me that you say "cast iron non sweet corn bread", as if you don't cook Jiffy in a cast iron skillet.

correct
1/2 stick of butter in the hot cast iron and 2 boxes of jiffy. That’s cornbread at my house.
although...I had a cornbread made with “corn kits” mix at a dinner and it was very good. Never heard of that one but the old ladies were swearing by it

I'd eat all of them. My wife prefers the sweet so I use Jiffy. I like to add half a jar of drained diced jalepenos to it. Put it in a preheated skillet then when it's almost done drizzle the top with a little bit of steens or pepper jelly.

Can only hope for as much.
And to the OP's question, skillet is preferred.

Sugar has no place in cornbread or grits. Jiffy mix might as well say cupcakes on the box.
