So what happened to Podnahs ?
Horrible, horrible. The ribs are like human ribs and the chopped beef has more clear fat in it than meat. Just gruesome.
But back to Dreamland........I just don't believe it was good enough. Did they do enough business to stay open and were just run poorly? Could be. But the couple times I ate there, it just didn't seem good enough for me.

With that said, the ribs were even worse.
From what I remember many years ago, the one on essen was at least decent..

that's a good parallel .. but i guess you have to wonder, why put the name on the building if the effort and capability to duplicate the original is just not there ?
If I owned the franchise, I agree. But thry sell Corky ribs on the friggin' Home Shopping Network so they don't seem to be too concerned with restaurants making sure things are run correctly.
If you are selling ribs mail order......then sir, you aren't concerned with making sure shite is good.

The food was ok, but not great, and that location had always been a restaurant graveyard.

apparently, it is not a pub graveyard ..

the sauce tasted like it was definitely Blue Plate BBQ
This is the best basic sauce in the world. I buy it wholesale since it isn't available retail anymore. I cut it with water and a dab of vinegar. Just plain old sauce. Not fancy and I like it thin.
Can't believe someone wouldn't like it. It's like liquid gold to me.

Imagine that, a bar/pub in Louisiana faring better than a BBQ restaurant...

Dreamland has the best bbq sauce out there....you can still buy it in quarts on their website .... 4 bottles or so delivered for about 40....love it. i hate sweet bbq, so this tangy stuff is the bomb.
I dont knwo about their ribs, but their pulled pork bbq sandwich was really, really good. Pair that with their banana pudding...stuff was hittin.
why didnt it make it in Baton Rouge? Because Baton Rouge has no idea what good bbq is...and we dont care. Period. Thats it.
I eat bbq pretty often on the road....Im not a hater....but South Louisiana will never support it wholeheartedly.
Why cant you get a good fried shrimp/oyster poboy in East Texas or Arkansas?

Did you go to Dreamland on Perkins? If you had what I had you would see that statement as ridiculous self puffery. It wasn't a matter of taste, the meat was completely dried out and chewy and several others who tried it had the same opinion.
From the speed of the failure it is apparent that it was the owners who had no idea of what good BBQ is.

Dreamland wasn't the only one that failed. Baton Rouge is picky, picky about BBQ. At the same time Dreamland opened, so did Smokey Bones. Corky's was a bit before, as well as Couyons and Brothers. Who are still standing? The local folks. Don't know what to say other than that it seems like this town only likes locally run bbq joints.

The one in the gas station, is it. I think dreamland/corky's/smokey bones may have had just a little more overhead than Couyons does

i think the sorry location is why dreamland failed in br. and the food sucked as well, not at all like the t-town version
they did have that sports talk show there for a while

Dreamland and Corky's are the only ones that closed.
Well Smokey Bones also closed, but not because the location fail. Darden Restaurants shut the entire concept down and closed them all.
Couyons is still open as is Brothers, but they moved to a different location.

Disagree.. People in Louisiana dont go OUT for BBQ when we want BBQ we just cook it at home. I know a ton of people always BBQing but I never hear of anyone say hey lets go out to eat BBQ. BBQ is like gumbo its better cooked at home than in the restaurants.

The most successful BBQ I have seen in BR was out in the burbs, Abe's on George O'Neil. But the owners closed it for personal reasons when they were still packing them in. Several others have failed at the same location. The BBQ at Abe's was outstanding and they had blues bands on weekends that attracted a large following.
So BBQ can work here as Jay's and a few others have demonstrated, but it has to be good, not some chain formula garbage. This is a food culture, but it is strange that middle eastern shrives here but BBQ struggles. I guess we like Beirut better than Memphis.
