Sizzler files for bankruptcy

Friends,
It may cause many of you great distress to know that another chain steakhouse, Sizzler, filed for bankruptcy today. Sizzler is considered the first of all American steakhouse chains, having opened in California in 1958. It spread throughout the West Coast, reaching a zenith in 1992 with its pivotal role in the film White Men Can't Jump. Many people, influenced by their East Coast bias, misquote the line, "We goin' sizzlin'." It is most certainly Sizzler.
Sizzler was the first of its kind, and many imitators used its model to bring steaks to the masses. For instance, on the East Coast, Western Sizzlin' opened in 1962. Its flagship restaurant was located in Fort Payne, AL, just across from the museum dedicated to the band Alabama. It permanently closed last month, shocking steak lovers throughout that state. In the Midwest and Texas, Steak and Ale was opened in 1968. Ryan's Buffet, specializing in cheap steaks, yeast rolls, and Shoney's-like salad bars recently failed after being founded in 1977.
Perhaps the greatest of them all, though, Golden Corral, which opened in Charlotte in 1973, has taken up the mantle of the all you can eat steak house with its masterfully marinaded and grilled steaks. The shutdown has harmed its business, and we await to see how it will recover. I pray that Sizzler's demise does not portend bad things for Golden Corral.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Shocked it was still open.

I bet 30 years from now the chain restaurant will be trendy again. Imagine all those people not even born yet scrounging the internet to recreate the cheap steaks, burgers, and onion blooms their beloved grandparents feasted on as children.

Ponderosa and Bonanza brands are still kicking.
I was told that behind the scenes, some folks changed the lyrics to the Bonanza theme song as:
Get it up
Put it in
Take it out
Don’t mess my hair up

I remember Western Sizzler not for the steaks, but for the ice cream-scoop of butter than used to come on the baked potato.

Surprised they were still around.
It was always a treat to occasionally go to the Western Steer after church on Sundays.
I saw a sign for a Western Sizzlin a few years back while traveling, kind of wish I'd stopped in for lunch but was in a hurry.

As a kid I preferred Western Sizzlin
Used to smash the beef tips, pepper and onions (was much larger oval plate back then)
and we made to occasional trip to Bonanza

Golden Corral,

The food is fit for flies.
But instead, the rancid meat was being served to customers, a Golden Corral restaurant employee says in a shocking video.
Brandon Huber's viral video of raw meat sitting in the summer sun by a parking lot dumpster has nearly 2 million views on YouTube — it also has customers, and the franchise's owner, disgusted."

Do the people that eat at Golden Corral think they are getting Grade A Top Choice meat?

Back in 2017 I went to a Sizzler for the first time in probably 30 years. Last time had been to the one on Airline near Hollywood back in the late 80s. This one was in San Jose, and it was probably the worst excuse for a steak I've ever had. Garbage.
My dad and I used to take my great aunt and uncle to Western Sizzlin on Florida every Sunday in the mid to late 80s. Holy shite, that was some good food at the time Loved that top sirloin.

Ive enjoyed some Golden Corral meals, but I only get the fried chicken with a bunch of sides. ( Mac and cheese, Mash potatoes and gravy, green beans, fried okra usually )
Their breakfast is decent too.
Ive been there when they were serving both, and got fried chicken with fried okra and a side of eggs and grits.

The first Cuco’s was in the defunct Sizzler location in Metairie. The Cuco’s business plan was to offer franchises to unhappy Sizzler franchisees.

The Western Sizzlin in Thibodaux was money when I was a poor college student. They used to put coupon’s in the Nicholls Worth for a .99 Big Tex Burger in the early 90’s. Or $1.99 with fries. Fountain drinks were maybe $1.00 also. 2.99 and a .50 tip you were out the door with a sit down meal.
We ate there at least once every couple of months right up until a former disgruntled employee burned it down.
I found one in Arkansas recently and got a chopped sirloin with onions and peppers and baked potato for nostaglia’s sake. It was actually really damn delicious.

There was a Western Sizzlin Steak House in Bogalusa, which I am proud to say I dined at not long before its closure, in the days that I would come home from LSU on the weekends to dry out and sober up from the week and me and the parents would trek around the general Northshore area looking for good eats.

I frankly can’t believe they were still in business. Low-grade steak gussied up and served to the low-grade masses. I guess there will continue to be a market for that.
