Going to make a run down to Houma to buy +/- 200lbs of shrimp in the next few weeks. Any suggestions or contacts? Current going prices? tia

Wife wanted to run to the seafood lot in Westwego yesterday and pick up 50 lbs. for the freezer but I'm not keen on that in the middle of "Hurricane Season". I've got the big freezer downstairs more than 1/2 empty right now just in case.

Might want to wait until inland white shrimp season opens in a few weeks and buy from the dock. Chances are the ones at the shrimp lot are IQF right now.

I definitely want fresh. The good thing about IQF shrimp are they are easy to spot in the coolers at the seafood dealers.

Individual Quick Frozen. They are caught by big commercial boats and frozen on the boat in many instances and done so individually so they don't stick together in clumps like shrimp frozen lumped together.

ETA: The way to tell if they have been IQF is if you go to a seafood place to buy them and hardly any of the shrimp offered have their long feelers on their heads.

When frozen, those are easily snapped off as they are so delicate.

Tracey Trahan at Shrimp Kindom, he's in Dulac on Shrimpers Row. He had a couple boats of his own and he has his own dock so he buys from other boats as well.

Called him and he said $5.50/lb for 18-22. Is that the going rate?

Disclaimer: It's been at least 6 months since I bought fresh shrimp but I paid $4.75 a lb. for 11-15's at the lot in Westwego. I buy at least 25 lbs. at a time when I get fresh shrimp in bulk.

Can't say for sure what the price would be today since I'm waiting until Hurricane Season is over before I buy shrimp.

That's about the going rate for retail dock price... maybe a tad bit high. Ask him if you get a discount for buying over 50lbs, some will. I have some shrimper friends. I paid $3.50# for 15-20s in season.

Is there a reason you don’t want to buy IQF if you are going to take them home and freeze most of them yourself?

I just called Seafood Shed in Golden Meadow and they have 10-15’s for 5.50 a pound.

That's a little high right now but the price is usually higher out of season. When the season opens I can get 21/25's for ~2.50lb and 16/20's for 3.00. 10/15's will run 3.50-3.75.

Disclaimer: this is once the season opens and the shrimp are running good.

All the "fresh" shrimp in Rouses are IQF. Nothing wrong with them.

IQF gulf shrimp are most times your best option. Unless you’re catching a local boat for ~3 pound.

Inland shrimping is set to open around August 9. All other shrimp are from the gulf and not as sweet. Just wait!
