I'm hosting a shrimp boil for memorial day -I'm not a big seafood guy. Can you boil royal reds and whites or another shrimp together in the same pot? I was thinking about getting both kinds to get people an option. Thanks!

Also - about how much seasoning powder is needed for about 20 pounds of shrimp?

These threads always make me think how nervous I would be if I was the OP.

I couldnt host a party for a large group of people where I am cooking the main dish and I havent basically gotten to the point where I could cook the food with my eyes closed. Especially on a large scale.

Good luck

Do Not cook Royal Reds with regular shrimp. They cook much faster, and really don't require the seasoning. They are naturally salty. If it was me I would steam them in a basket above the water you are boiling for the regular shrimp. About 4-5 minutes of steaming should do the trick. Serve with drawn butter like lobsta.

haha I agree! I'm letting another guy cook - I'm just getting supplies. I'm not confident enough to risk ruining it all.

Honest assessment and I can appreciate that. A person has to know their limits until they surpass them and gain confidence in any aspect of life.

The proboil jar say 1 cup per 5 lbs of shrimp. I would double that, then add liquid crab boil to spice/taste.

So 8 cups powder plus liquid to taste? I did 10lbs this weekend with 4 cups powder and 1/2c liquid and the spice was good.

Especially something like boiled shrimp where a minute too long or a tad too much salt can mean tough as hell to peel.

I love boiled shrimp, and do them from time to time, but they’re always thrown on top of either crawfish or crabs in the pot. They’re more a side seafood dish than the mean attraction, so if I screw it up, not as big a deal.

Worst peeling shrimp are fresh brown shrimp. Easiest or white shrimp that have been iced down hard for a few days or previously frozen.

all shrimp peel easy if you cook them right.

Bring to boil, put shrimp in for 1 minute. PULL shrimp at 1 minute and spread them out so they cool enough to quit cooking. I don't like to ice shrimp or cool them down with water because I don't like them too cold. Shrimp will be easy to peel and cooked perfect if you use "boiling sized" shrimp. Don't do this with 10-12 count monsters, you have to cook them longer but you can still get them easy peeling with about 1.5-2 minutes cook time if you cool them quick with the monster shrimp.
