For the the last several years I've gotten my father a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. He actually prefers Johnnie Walker Black which is much, much cheaper. Other than that he generally drinks Dewars.

Don't drink scotch, in fact I hate it (have tried to like it).

Would like to get him something of quality that he may not have had before.

Any recommendations?

Highland Park 12 is in that Johnny walker taste realm i. e not peated, but better. And it's a very good value. Get the HP 18 if you want to spend a little more.

Talisker storm, Just enough smoke to let ya know it's a proper Scotch but not overwhelming like Laphroaig, and a hint of salinity to remind you it's made by the sea on the Isle of Skye. It's my go to Scotch

I’m generally a pure single malt guy but if I recall both blue and black have a bit of peat smoke in them.

If he likes that, get him a nice Islay Single Malt.

Lagavulin 8, 16 or the Distillers Edition
Ardebeg 10, Corryvrekan or An Oa
Kilchoman Sanaig or Loch Gorm
Laphroig 10
Caol Ila 12

That’s a good starting list

Someone above mentioned Talisker Storm which is Ok. I much prefer the 10 or the 18. The 18 is a little sweeter with less of smokiness and brine influence but it’s still there. You drink it and have no doubt it’s a Talisker.

Glenlivet 18 is my favorite unpeated, and Laphroaig 10 is my favorite peated.

Ended up going with Highland Park 18 after talking to the "experts" at the store. We'll see how it goes.

If he doesn't like it he'll just give it to one of his friends.

He doesn't mince words.

I had this one this weekend for the first time. My goodness, it is amazing.

OP, if your dad like JW black, buy him that. Don’t reinvent the wheel. It’s a nice gesture to try something new, but scotch drinkers like what they like.
