Taking a trip there next month and want to get out of the town and hit up a few wineries that are open for tastings. More interested in smaller wineries but a big one is ok if worth it. Any suggestions?

Take the drive over the San Marcos Pass (Hwy 154) and visit the Santa Ynez Valley. It's about a 40 minute drive from Santa Barbara to the little town of Los Olivos, where lots of wineries from the Santa Ynez Valley and Sta. Rita Hills have tasting rooms.
Some of my favorites are Tensley, Blair Fox, Dragonette, Brewer-Clifton, Foxen, Fess Parker, Stolpman, and Larner

Hope you enjoy being in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Can't help with the wine, though.

Is Santa Barbara allowing out of state visitors right now? We were hoping to go there in May but were under the impression everything is pretty locked down right now for tourists

Drive over the mountains and go to Los Olivos. There are a bunch of tasting rooms downtown all walking distance from one another. I seem to remember dream cote being a good one, but really they all were good. On the way there or way back stop and get a damn good tri tip sandwich at Cold Spring Tavern.

Definitely check out Solvang. A great little town with some good wineries. Lucas & Lewellen, Lions Peak to name a few. There are a lot.
Foxen in Santa Ynez.
Sanford in Lompoc
Zaca Mesa in Los Olivos
Alma Rosa - Buellton
Cambria - Santa Maria
Rancho Sisquoc - Santa Maria (highly recommend)

After Solvang, hit up the ostrich farm and feed the ostriches and emus. It’s actually really entertaining.
Hitching Post has some great bbq as well.

If you spend the night in the Solvang area, go to dinner at The Ballard Inn, five minutes from Solvang on the way to Los Olivos. The chef, Budi Kazali does what I would call French-Asian fusion. Fantastic food. Great wine list too, although you can bring your own bottle if you like.

Definitely go to los olivos...Lompoc wine ghetto was great (especially Seasmoke). Koehler was the surprise favorite small winery.

My wife and I were detoured on our trip down the pacific coast highway and just ran into this town on accident. Very pleasant surprise!

Watch the movie Sideways. It's filmed and based in that whole area.

quote:Oh yeah. When we still lived in Los Angeles we used to go up there 4-5 times a year for a couple of days. We must have done that for close to 15 years. We'd stay in Solvang and then hit the wineries and tasting rooms. Got to know several of the winemakers, like Blair Fox and Brandon Sparks-Gillis from Dragonette pretty well. We would have moved there when I retired if we weren't so determined to get out of California
