I love Diplomatico, but seeing this mentioned twice has me intrigued.

You need to check out the Baton Rouge Rum Society hosted by Milodangers and signed by HolyGrale
Rule #1 Dont talk about the society
Diplomatic Reserva
El Dorado 12, 15
Dos Maderas 5+5
Pusser’s Nelsons Blood 15yr (if you can find it)
Some cheaper ones that are good:
Doorleys 8
Dos Maderas 5+3
Plantation Barbados 5
All the Plantation rums are pretty good, but they are a little pricey for what you get IMO. The Plantation Pineapple is the best flavored rum out there.
I just grabbed this from total wine and its fantastic, albiet simple . Heavy banana and clove with some nice vanilla.

If you want a real rum experience I would stay away from Zaya and Bumbu

drink rum, almost exclusively. My favorite rums, in order, are: Zaya Bumbu Diplomatico Whalers
These all have sugar added

This intrigued me since I've not seen it around here. Google tells me it's a total wine brand, bottled by Maison Ferrand (who also bottle plantation rums). How does it compare to the plantation? Wondering if it's the same as one of the plantations just in a different bottle and label.

I have not had every Plantation, but this does not remind me of any of them. I know Plantation makes a Panama, I wonder if this is related to that. Either way, this one is about $20 cheaper than almost all the Plantation rums.
Good find on the info.

The majority of rums arent readily available in the US, because Americans don’t drink much of it. Most rums are found in Europe, especially France. The French are huge into their rum, you’ll find Rhum shops with only rum. So I’ll refrain from listing unavailable ones
That being said, here are my favorite makers that distribute to America:
- Zafra
- Foursquare
- El Dorado
- Rhum Barbancourt
- Holmes Cay
Best for a beginner is El Dorado 15yr. Then if you liked that, move to Zafra. After that, try a different style with the Barbancourt 8/12yr (lighter and more terroir)(Haitian runs are great and often a rhum agricole). Then hit the Foursquare shibboleth, 2007, 2008,redoutable, or Empery.
Drink neat or with a small cube, but preferably neat.

A bunch of good responses. Hope to try some new ones myself based on this info.

I almost bought this today for the novelty of the bottle, but I got the stank eye from the nice African American girl stocking shelves when she saw me checking it out…

where is that old duster
Posted on 11/30/21 at 4:22 pm to nolaks
At a local shop in Vicksburg. Several rums there collecting dust. They had an el dorado 21yr that tempted me, but I wasn’t ready to spend $100 on it just yet.
