Rum on the rocks

I like rum. I feel like rum isn’t very popular but I like it, spiced, dark, or clear. There’s just a smoothness and a vibrancy to it. I love whiskey too but I find whiskey to be very biting at times, sometimes it catches you in the back of the throat. Sometimes the taste is too powerful, even with smoother whiskies.:
Never had just rum on the rocks before and I’ve never of anyone else ordering it before.
Went to a bar that had a bunch of seasonal, rare drinks and I decided I’d try a rum on the rocks. I unfortunately don’t remember the brand and I’d never heard of the brand before but I think it was mid shelf. Some sort of special seasonal. I even asked the waitress if she’d ever had anyone order a rum on the rocks and she said it was very rare.
Man, it was great.it was smooth. It had taste without being overpowering. It was the most sipable drink I’ve had in a long time
I’ll definitely try more rums on the rocks going forward

Dark n stormy is one of the more underrated cocktails out there. I feel like it’s a Moscow Mule without the use of vodka.

They’re super easy to make. I even got a seasonal gift pack once that just came with two ginger beers.

If you like rum you should try Bumbu. It’s delicious.

Ron Zacapa 23 with 1 or 2 cubes

Not all rum wants a cube of ice. Some are very good neat. There has been a swell of rum converts in the last few years. It's relatively cheap, currently, and there are a whole range of great ones out there for under $50. A great one for new rum drinker is Zaya. It's a bit one note but is a great way to get your toes into the rum pool. Welcome to the wonderful world of Rum.

This one ice is delicious. Tastes like vanilla and tobacco in the best way. A little sweet and zero of that alcohol taste/burn going down. Very smooth.

This was my go-to for a while. I think Zaya is good and somewhat widely available.
ETA: apparently this rum is being produced differently now than when I drank it 5 years ago and now sucks based on some reviews I'm reading. frick me, right?

My brother has been bringing over some fantastic rum to the house, over the past few months. He's big into cigars and rum goes very well with a cigar.
El Dorado 15 year is fantastic.
Tried some Matusalem 15 year and was also very good.
These rums have changed my perception of rum. Had a rum flight in Antigua 6 years ago and that shite was harsh. This stuff my brother is bringing by is legit. Very good, smooth, and some great vanilla notes in it.

The best rums are the ones that aren’t spiced or loaded with additives like Dark rums
Start with El Dorado 15 year and Zafra 21 year. Two rums on different spectrums.
And upper tier rum is still very affordable unlike whiskey
You will be a very happy man

This holds true for tequila as well.

Where do you get Diplomatico? Zaya is the only rum I've seen locally that I've had decent experiences with in the past but my pallet is really only tuned to bourbon so I'm looking for some suggestions.

Havana Club Anejo 15

Man, the dark and stormy is my favorite. Aside from that, if you are a dark rum fan, I really enjoy Blackwell for the price. It is a good dark rum if you can find it...

ABC Store on Hollywood in Mountain Brook had it. The ABC Store in Pelham had it too. Pelham is the supply point for all the restaurants in Bham. They will have stuff that the other stores won't.
Kirk and Sweeney 23 is my next purchase. I like the 18, but hope the 23 is better.

Big Rum fan here and to me the K & S is a little more bourbon-like than Diplomatico but they are both great. But threads like these make me nervous. I don't want Rum to turn into Bourbon where the prices become absurd.
Edit to say that Rum is terrible--all sugar--will give you a terrible headache and it funds a bunch of commies. Don't buy.
