Headed to Total Wine in Laffy. I don't have a single bottle in my cabinet. Any suggestions? How's the Bayou brand?

Very meh outside of the spiced or satsuma.

If you want a good sipper you can't go wrong with a Dominican rum.

Flor de Cana is my favorite value mixing rum.

Eta: apparently their aged stuff is pretty good. Haven't gotten a chance to try it yet.

I’m seeing this late - what did you go with?

Ron Zacapa would’ve been my suggestion - very smooth and easy to drink - worth the price

I’m a big fan of the Foursquare Rums. They’re not spiced or sweetened - more like a bourbon. Pretty pricey but worth it. You can find it at Calandro’s on Perkins from time to time.

I have an unopened bottle of Seven Fathoms Rum from Grand Cayman. No idea if it’s any good or not?

Ended up with a bottle each of Flor De Cana (7) and Bayou Spiced. Both good but the vanilla dominates the Bayou. Can't taste the other spices. The Flor De Cana is pretty good and not too sweet. It's definitely different.

Ron Zacapa 23 is a must. Get the XO if you're an OT baller.

Sailor Jerry Spiced is another good one.
Gosling's Black Seal for Dark N' Stormy cocktails.

Bayou Spiced is good....heavy on banana.

Assuming you're only wanting something available in the USA

Best not-too-expensive: Zafra 21yr

Best Rhum Agricole: Rhum Barbancourt 15yr (technically not agricole according to GI standards, but noethless, it is the style)

Best regardless of price: Foursquare 2004 (11yr) / 2005 release (12 year)

Flor de Caña is not Dominican, their 12 yo is very good....
below that they are just OK.

Zacapa is good but overrated and expensive....try Botran, from the same distillery...I think better and cheaper.

Dominican: Kirk and Sweeney has become my favorite.

If you are just looking for good rums, there are many...
a couple....hard to find:
Facundo Collection - Exquisito made for cigars about $100, the Paraiso Rum is aged in Cognac Barrels... a little too "harsh" for me. and $250 a bottle.
Bacardi Gran Reserva 16.... about $100

If ever in Cuba...DO NOT GO now... Ron Santiago 11 and 15, the 25 is waaay overpriced....this is the original Bacardi Distillery.
for Mojitos = 3 year old Cuban Havana Club white... it is actually slightly yellowish.

Have not tried Bayou rums because I have not seen anything exceptional about them anywhere and at least in Texas, they are more expensive.

Want a cheap but good white rum to mix: CANE RUM

I did not include a pretty good Panamanian rum...
Abuelo 12.

Bayou makes a great spiced rum for the price. For a dark, go with black magic. Not sure what to recommend for a clear rum.

Ron Zacapa 23 year as said.

If you want something cheaper, Bacardi 8 is decent for the price. My uncle makes us rum and cokes with that every time we're at his house. Maybe I've developed a taste for it
