Rocca pizza review

Finally got around to going to checking out Rocca's pizza on government last night.
Here are my thoughts:
Atmosphere: As far as pizza places go, id say it has an upscale atmosphere. think bistro byronz or a larger Flambee. As far as how it fits into the Baton Rouge pizza scene, it is the most upscale and would make the best date spot.
Appetizer: We ordered the Baked Rigatoni with creamy pork ragu topped with breadcrumbs. I thought it was pretty good and unique, i had never had something like it before.
Pizza: Ordered the Standard pepperoni.(basic i Know, but the options they have are not really my style)
Id give the crust an A, hands down the best part of the pizza. However, i was not a fan of the style of pepperoni that they used and they added sauce on top of some of the pepperonis which i've never seen before.
Verdict: Perfect place for a date,if you are wanting pizza and wine. However, based on just the pizza it does not come close to Red Zeppelin, lit pizza, or even Mellow Mushroom. The cheese, sauce, and topping combination just didnt have the normal deliciousness that you expect when eating a pizza.

What??.. how do you possibly have lit pizza (basically subway/Izzos on a heated up tortilla) and even MM in the same tier as Red Zepplin

Actually, Lit and Red Zep's are my two favorites in BR so not sure why that is a shocker....
I ate at Rocca as well and found the atmosphere to be nice but the pizza was average as well as the appetizer. The garlic knots were fried which made them extra greasy and just not what I was expecting. I went into thinking it would be similar to Pizza Domenica and found myself disappointed.
With all that said, I would bring the wife for dinner again possibly.

Maybe I need to try Lit again, been a couple of times and just very unimpressive, gimmicky, quality of ingredients was just OK. It fills a decent niche for "quick" pizza, especially if you have a family that all wants something different... RZ on the other hand I find to always be some of the best in BR

For those that have had Rocca and really enjoyed their pizza, what was it that did it for you? I'm curious

I love the ingredients at Lit, as well as the customization. One complaint I could see being said about lit is that the crust can get lost under their toppings and sauce. I'm a fan of lots of cheese, sauce, etc so it doesn't bother me though.

Atmosphere is great...pizza needs to improve...not bad but it could be better

i've thought the pizza has improved each time we've gone. drink prices are obscene though

I guess I'm going to have to try Red Zeppelin again, because I'd put it way below Lit, Johnny's, and Mellow, all of which I like. Before I do, do you also pump Anthony's Deli? Pocorello's? Trying to avoid an unnecessary trip.

I'm just curious, have you ever been to a place that serves that "style" of pizza before?
I've taken people who were used to eating more of a "normal" style of pizza, to places (Domenica and Bread & Circus) and they did not really enjoy wood fired/Neapolitan style pizza.

I’ve seen this so many times....some ppl who grew up on mass market chain US pizza can’t wrap their brains around various other pizza styles. Many diff styles of pizza, try em all and eat what you like. The borderline scorching, tender yet crisp crust, and relatively light topping load of Neapolitan wood fired pizza is delicious to me.....

This is fricking lunacy
Rocca is putting out the best pizza in town right now. They still have room to improve, but they are serving a high quality product.

The best thing about lit is the quality of the ingredients, outside of the crust, which is just ok.
I like rocca, im not a huge fan of neopalitan style pizza, give me ny style all day, but ive enjoyed the combination of toppings they use.
Also, the garlic knots and the dipping “cream” are awesome, i like that they are fried and crispy on the outside but more doughy in the middle.

Agree. There's nothing wrong with not being into that style of pizza, but if you're just not into Neapolitan style pizza, I don't know if you can call it better or worse than a place that isn't that style. This is why I hate shite like Yelp. One of the first reviews Rocca got is from some old man complaining that it wasn't "loaded with toppings". That's kinda unfair.
I liked Rocca for what it is. Although I agree with the person above - give me a foldable cheesy slice of NY pizza over anything else.

Agreed. There's a difference between food not being good, and you not liking it, or it not being what you expected.

For me, they are basically two different food items. Sometimes I crave a slice of pepperoni from Pizza Delicious, and sometimes I crave a Margherita from Bread & Circus. I guess it's similar to comparing a burger from Cowbell to a burger from Company Burger. They are different items in my mind.

Lit and RZ are decent by BR standards but I certainly hope that Rocca is at a higher level than that. Gonna check it out this weekend - hoping that it’s similar to Ancora
