Who here has one, how often do you use it and how old is it?

We have a Hitachi ChimeOmatic that is going on 38 years old. Got it as wedding gift from my aunt Rose. Last night and the last time I used it I noticed it had a short right at the plug. A replacement costs 12.99 and up. I stopped in at Lowe's and picked up a replacement plug, put it on and there's no telling..... it may last another 38 years. That is a great little rice cooker!

Call me old fashioned but I do mine in a pot with water, a bit of salt, cover it and let it cook. Have never owned a designated rice cooker.

I have one of those. Actually a small and a large. Love them. Put that cooker over the side where it doesn't take up space on the stovetop and let it go. Perfect rice and plenty of stovetop space for all the other things I'm cooking.

My mama has that same rice cooker—it makes the tinny little “ding” when rice is done. Nothing makes her children happier than to see that old rice cooker with its semi-melted knob, because it means gumbo is nearby. She never uses it for anything else, just making big batches of rice for a big pot of gumbo. Hers is at least that old!

My sister’s 20 year old chiming rice cooker died recently....for nostalgia’s sake, she wanted to replace it with a “ding” model and couldn’t find one. She tried eBay, thrift stores, etc.....so I gave her mine, which I rarely use. My small household gets by with a 2-quart saucepan and 1 cup of rice cooked at a time. I only ever used the big RC for parties.

Don't use a cooker anymore. Been using an Oster steamer for the past 8 years or so.
Fill the steamer as usual, the rice container is a solid bowl and to it, I add 8-10 oz (coffee mug) and the equivalent amount of water. Set the timer for 40 min and done.

Yep. Rice cooker just waste of money. It's amazing how many people cannot make rice with just a pot and lid.
My wife's family was just floored when they first met me and I made rice in a pot with lid (no rice cooker). Almost like they didn't think it was possible.

Not to me. Its fantastic for large quantities of rice and holds it warm without affecting the rice. I use about 3 or so of them when I'm serving a lot of gumbo at once. I can make rice just fine on the stove. I choose not to.

Have had a 4 cup one for about 15 years now. As other said it’s great for a lot of rice and keeping it warm. Will use a pot sometimes if making a cup or something, but the cooker is so easy The point isn’t that rice is hard, I just like not taking up another burner and being able to just plug it in and forget about it.

We've used a National SR-MM10NS for at least 20 yrs. Makes the best rice on earth. It cooks under pressure and uses less water than rice by volume when set on regular. Regular mode takes 45 min to cook. Makes up to 5 1/2 cups of rice (dry basis)and has a warm setting for after it's finished.

There's a replacement for it you can google.

I've come to understand this. I can make rice just fine with a sauce pan and a lid, but sometimes you want to keep it warm for a while without it getting brown, drying out, or turning cold. Doesn't mean that you can't cook rice, just that you want a greater time margin to serve it.

Marcus and grigri understand! It is not the skill of rice cooking. But rather the automation and consistency that can be achieved:

My dad was telling me that the ladies at his church can cook their rice at home and bring it to pot lucks and the rice is still warm due to some double-wall (aka Yeti) insulation!

The problem I have with keeping rice warm, especially in large quantities is that it will often overcook and get mushy, much like putting 40 lbs. of crawfish in an ice chest and not dumping them soon on a table to serve----they overcook.

On that scale I get what you're saying. My pop's friends are bringing like 1-2lbs max.

I have a Zojirushi rice cooker. Have had it for about 5 years and love it. Use it at least once a week. Programmable so I can have rice ready when I walk in the door.

I know how to cook rice...But I will be damned if the rice is cooked or under cooked..it is never the same. I got a rice cooker and it is perfect every time. I set it up and don't think about it till the thing clicks. It was like $25.00.
