No, not at all. At a place like those mentioned a bottle of wine or a cocktail is a complement to the meal. If you are going to eat at a place like that, clear your schedule and have fun.

Tom Fitzmorris is full of shite sometimes but one thing I agree with him on is that eating at a really nice restaurant should be taken seriously. You should dress up and take your time to really enjoy it. Why else are you spending $100 a head on food?

Unless you're 20 and your life sucks :(

Not that I've been ID'd in a restaurant in a long time (especially an upscale one) .. but still! :)

Generally, if you're dropping $100 a person, they wouldn't dream of IDing you.. especially when they know you could be spending half the bill on drinks.

Pretty much the ONLY places that ID are national chains because they can afford to.

Anyone here ever frequent the late Food Network forums/board? They finally took it down because of the intense flaming, but the heated debates on service and waitstaff were highly entertaining.

For some reason, conversation about service always interests me. I would have liked to see that.. especially if it had personal stories of bad service.

It was very interesting, and the server topic seemed to surface quite frequently. A good percentage of people on that board think that waitstaff personel are the scum of the earth, not worthy of a ten percent tip, and also you had people who have been servers with the other side of the story. It became very heated.

Now you've got me wanting to watch the movie Waiting.

I can tell you something interesting about restaurant service people. My business was expanding and I was preparing to hire a sales staff. I had lunch one day with a friend who is a very successful sales manager of a national company, so I asked him what to look for when hiring sales people. He said he always looks for people who have worked as waiters/waitresses and liked it. He said the skill of learning to please customers and work with reluctant production people is very valuable in business.

His sage advise paid off for me.

I guess I just don't get the fuss over "service" in general. Short of (1) outright rudeness or (2) major screwups like bringing the wrong thing, it's just not that big an issue to me. I'm way more interested in the food.

It just kind of baffles my mind that there are people who go to restaurants thinking "I swear to God this waiter better not serve me from the wrong side or so help me I don't know what will happen." Plus you have these people with 100% heartfelt, and directly opposite, views -- should the dishes be cleared before everyone is done, or not? Apparently no matter which one a waiter chooses he's going to seriously piss off one poster in this thread.

Exactly. Life would suck if I let these little things bother me.

I think this is why you don't notice bad service very often.
I try to avoid places that I think I am going to end up having to deal with dumbass servers. In the last 2 years I think I have only had one instance where I had any service issues.

I would like to have seen that message board. I didnt realize this was going to be such a heated topic. I would like to note in my original post that I never said I received bad service. I just pointed out some things which annoy me. I hold no deep animosity towards FOH staff; I just like things done a certain way.
