Restaurant Depot- New Place opening in NO

Anyone heard of this place or have been there? If so how was it? They are opening one in New Orleans in a few months. It's aimed at restaurants and not the general public. It looks like a pretty cool place and sounds like it might be a good concept.
Restaurant Depot
Since I am still jobless, I applied for the Seafood Manager job. I'm wondering how good each department will be and how competitive they will be compared to distributors.

Been in the one in St. Louis. The only unfortunate thing about them is they are too anal about only selling to restaurants. They would make a ton of money selling to the general public.

Was it nice? Nice seafood & meat selection? Is it similar to sam's?

I guess they are trying to get their niche and compete with food service companies. I get what you are saying though. Some people like to shop in bulk (like sam's).

It is all good. The parking lot is generally full.

i'm a member of the one in alexandria, va. meat section is really good. nice cuts, and good deli meats. steaks and pork are very nice. seafood section is just bags of frozen stuff (at mine. maybe in la. they'll do it different). for that matter, there's no meat counter either - it's all just refrigerated.
produce is generic, like you'd expect for restaurants. loads of bulk canned product, sort of like a sysco truck opened it's doors and pulled away real fast.
decent selection of restaurant grade pots, pans, table items, ladles, etc. really good catering type stuff.
they have baked goods, but no idea where they get them.
overall the place is great if you need a load of stuff on short notice. i doubt anyone stocks their store from there. got lots of neat stuff. i'm not sure what a seafood manager would do though...

That's why I was asking what it was like. According to the description, the position is supposed to be in charge of purchasing, setting up displays, managing crew, etc. The job calls for someone who has been in a seafood distribution or food service company which I have been. Not sure really though.

well, none of the departments are "manned" at the store i go to. if you go to their website and look as the pictures flash by, you'll see the deli meats that *kinda* like the one at "my" store. but there are no fresh fish on ice, whole fish or partial fish that's fresh. just bags from frozen stuff. i guess from that picture that some of the stores must have a "real" seafood department.

I'm assuming that they will have a descent seafood department being that it is in New Orleans but no telling.

Got hired on with them a week ago. Looks like they will lead with seafood (they are going to really push seafood in this store) in their New Orleans store where I will be working. They seem like they will be carrying lots of fresh fish/seafood also. They also asked me if I could fillet tuna when they interviewed with them which I can do very well. Should be interesting and seems like they will be the best place in the area to buy fish for business owners in a retail type setting. I fly out next monday for training in Orlando for a month or so then it's off to another city for training until the end of December.

If you have a business license (occupational license) you can. If you know someone who owns a business, you might be able to use their account. From my understanding atleast.

Been training with them for 2 weeks in Orlando and also in 1 week in south Florida at their 4 stores near Miami.
A litte inside info on the New Oreans store, they want it to be their biggest seafood department in the southeast region. The stores in Orlando and the 4 near Miami all carry a ton of seafood. More than any other retail type setting that I have ever been to (and a lot more than even Tony's in Baton Rouge). At the one store I was working at they had about 15-20 different types of fillets (swordfish, chilean sea bass, sushi tuna, haddock, cod, farm raised salmon, wild sockeye salmon, grouper fillets, snapper fillets, flounder fillets, skate wings, rainbow trout, catfish fillets, etc.). They also carry a big variety of whole fish, scallops, mussels, clams, lobsters (maine and florida), oysters, shrimp, stone crab claws, etc. The place is super busy at the store I worked in.
The New Orleans store should be similar but will be a little more directed toward shrimp, oysters, crawfish (live, tails, etc.), crabs (maybe live and crabmeat), local fish (farm redfish, drum, sheephead, amberjack, etc.). I think it will blow away anything New Orleans has in fresh fish or seafood wise in a retail setting at pretty much all wholesale prices. They are very cheap on some items and they don't work on big margins. Also, they don't clean whole fish but do trim bigger cuts of fish into chunks or steaks to sell them easier. Things such as sword loins, tuna loins, chilean sea bass fillets, etc.

Congrats Jason & still miss your Po-Boys... maybe you can convince them to sell them out of a window on the side.
And if we flash our gold-embossed TigerDroppings membership card at the front door, we get a free tour, right?
