What's the difference, other than a minor bump in price?? I'll hang up and listen.

one is certified organic, the other is not

a quick Google search can yield any confusion as to what "certified organic" means

I'd challenge anybody to a blind taste test of various fruits and vegetables, organic and non-organic and I'd put good money down that they'd not get it right more times than they do.

My experience with these "I will only eat organic" is it has more to do with the brainwashing between their ears than due to their taste buds preferring it.

I know neither my wife nor my kids can tell the difference, as I buy them interchangeably.

As I do with all my fruits and veggies, I buy whichever looks the best.

Most of the time that just happens to be organic though. Maybe its just because they are less picked through.

All our eating bananas are clones. They are the same banana.

I’ve been buying organic bananas for years simply because they have a longer shelf life. Taste is the same. The price is so incremental (maybe 30-40 cents for a bunch) that it’s not a big deal.

I don't see how this is possible. Every banana, in every store is an identical clone. They are all Cavendish variety. Why would organic make it last longer? Read "The fish that ate the Whale". A great book about Sam Zemurray and United Friut. I discusses the change from the Gros Michel variety to the Cavendish after a disease wipped out that variety.

Organic has zero to do with the plant's genetic identity/variety. It has everything to do with how the plant is grown--what fertilizers, pesticides, and other substances are used during its cultivation.

I'm not arguing for or against organic, just making the point that how a plant is grown can absolutely have an impact on the taste. Even two identical plants grown from the same parent seed can have different fruit qualities based on the soil, water, sunlight, substances used. This is the whole basis for the concept of terrior, most often applied to grapes/winemaking. Where something grows, and how it is grown, definitely make a difference.

Um, they most certainly do last longer, if they are organic. I'm not some crunchy granola hipster that only eats organic. My youngest son loves bananas, so I pick some up every week. We dont feed them to him everyday, so 5 or 6 bananas need to last a little longer before they transform into flies. Through experience, i find organic gives me 2 or 3 more days more shelf life than non-organic. Take from it what you will.

Organics likely last longer b/c they're picked, handled, & shipped to have a longer shelf life. How they're handled makes a big difference in how quickly they go from green to black.

What's the science of this?

Organics also consistently have a better texture.

You mean do I have peer reviewed studies? LolNO.
I meant that they're substantially more expensive than non-organic bananas, so they're better handled from the get-go. Some are even sold with the stems still wrapped to deter fast ripening. Likely, some have those wrapped stems unwrapped just before they're put out on the store shelves.

I actually find the regular ones to taste better. The organic ones I’ve tried all have a weird texture, but maybe I haven’t found the good stuff.
