Regarding lettuce and pickles on a burger.

The lettuce should never be shredded and although pickles are a must, consider trying pepperoncini instead next time. It's a nice change of pace.

Lettuce is optional, yes. It doesn't make or break but I do like the texture leaves of lettuce brings. Something off putting happens however when you shred it. The flavor changes and it loses its crispness almost immediately.

If I'm having an American style burger, yes. Sans jalapeños of course. The pepperoncini however in lieu of pickles is really good and I recommend trying it.

I mean I get them at Subway and put them on pizzas at home from a jar in my fridge. They are definitely good, i wouldnt imagine anyone who likes them would argue they wouldnt be good on beef.

Well it's an under appreciated pickled pepper. The jalapeño gets all the press but I don't think it's as good.

I eat them almost daily with my lunch salad, but it would completely overpower a burger, especially those with juice. Pickles are a little more subtle and have their place.

I tried to get a ressy, but I was told I don't move and definitely don't shake enough.
Also, pickles are grotesque. Completely ruin a burger when the retarded waiter fricks it's up
