There is an easy fix to reduce the amount of gas from red beans. I learned this from my Uncle Buddy.

When you make a pot of beans it’s important to know precisely how many beans go in the pot.

Count your beans and only put 239 beans in the pot you are cooking. If you add just one more, it will be too farty.

You don’t have to be a jerk about it.

Honestly, red beans aren’t that good and I don’t miss or crave them at all since giving them up years ago.
that’s funny
I hardly ever “crave” any particular food item except for one…a good pot of red beans. There is no substitute and no comparable flavor profile

common knowledge but worth repeating…you could live perfectly fine on nothing but beans and rice.

quote:

Beans and rice are among the oldest foods known to humankind. Both are easy to grow, plentiful, and filling. The combination of beans and rice creates a complete protein. Beans alone and rice alone both lack certain essential amino acids. If eaten together, however, each contributes what the other is missing to form a complete protein.

epazote

Did you know that stuff grows wild in South Louisiana?

I had a helper who worked in a restaurant in Mexico before he came to the states. He found some at our facility in Houma. Looked it up online and sure enough it was epazote. He also mentioned that it was used in the preperation of beans.

Red beans and rice is the most overrated dish in New Orleans culinary history and is outrageously forgettable

No, I didn't know that. That's very interesting.

A found a pic of a plant:

You can buy seeds online or dried leaves at your local international food market.

love red beans and rice, but over the past years they have given me horrible gas for like 3 days after. Because of this I don’t cook them nearly as often as I’d like.
they used to wreck my gut. I tried the baking soda deal and it seemed to help

Over the years the gas thing just went away.

don't eat beans anymore. I don't really miss them. I don't understand the desire to continue to eat something that your body is clearly having adverse reactions to.

I’ve found soaking overnight, then boiling them for 10 minutes before putting in the slow cooker gets rid of the lectins. Always use fresh water for the soak, the boil, and the cooking. I use chicken broth for the cooking.

Man, you love your beans I guess. How does what I said make me simple?

Oh, and you can go frick yourself too, bitch. You’ve always come across as a stupid son of a bitch. But you sure do seem to love beans. Sorry (not sorry) I offended your beans.

I remember reading a study, basically, the only thing that reduces gas from beans is a product like Beano or a generic equivalent. The rest is old wives tales.
