is the correct number 3 or 5?

At least 10.

I use minced garlic in some recipes, but it's hard to beat fresh cloves sometimes.

ETA: Southside Produce has cheap peeled garlic cloves in 8 oz. servings... for the lazy.

I have no clue how it works. Friction? But it's a noticeable sound.

OXO Garlic Peeler

I just googled "garlic peeler" for that image. I have the OXO one. Its dishwasher safe which is convenient. I'd imagine they work the same. Same concept.

Peeling garlic has never bothered me, it's the mincing it that I hate.

The correct answer is 6 then a bunch if the Costco granulated garlic later.

FYI. Cooking whole cloves of garlic gives a mild sweet flavor, sliced garlic is a little less sweet, and minced garlic is more spicy and “strong”. Pressing garlic keeps away the vampires, and is what I use when I want the most bite.

store bought pre chopped garlic or whole peeled garlic

My children watched a documentary on Netflix where Chinese prisoners were forced to peel garlic in filthy conditions using their hands and feet. They fussed about garlic in jars. Now we buy whole and they peel themselves.

I usually crush the garlic with the flat side of the knife blade. The peeling pops off. I rinse the knife and mince it with the knife a little wet to deal with the stickiness.

If the garlic doesn't have to be sauteed, I sometimes use the dry minced. It has sort of a toasted flavor that I like.

I smash cloves, too. Trim the little root end, smash with knife, squeeze off peel, and you barely need to chop if you’ve smashed it well. I do keep a garlic press for those times when you want no pieces at all.

Also, it can be nice to add garlic twice to long-cooking dishes. Some at the beginning, sautéed for toasty flavor notes, and then another whack of garlic out of the press near the end of cooking time to up the pungency.

I also add it early and later sometimes. Depends on the dish. I have a press, also.

Let me introduce y’all to the garlic wheel. Just throw in a few fresh cloves and run it across the counter back n forth a few times

I buy this at Trader Joe’s. I keep a bunch of packs in the freezer at all times. It’s great.

Also, for those who don't like peeling garlic... Take the cloves off the head, place in a large bowl put the bowl together with another bowl and shake vigorously. You'll hear the change in sound once all the cloves have peeled. It's awesome.

I use a method that’s way easier. Just microwave each clove for about 10 seconds. The covering slips right off like magic.
