170/156/150
same as last Thursday.
All this arguing is making me hungry.
Tastes great, less filling
walk, don't walk
atkins vs WW points
Bikers vs runners
intervals vs long and slow
Can't we all just get along?

Atkins says to not exercise too hard and burn out IIRC, much like CAD is saying
i mean i know y'all are looking at a guy who competes in very hard bicycle racing events who is telling you this so it sounds counter-intuitive.
i guess my point is that at nearly 260, if i had climbed onto my 14-lb carbon fiber bicycle i would have torn it up. no way i could do what i'm doing now.
i slowly built up to exercising..the last thing i wanted to do was sprain a muscle and set back my exercising by 6 months. its far worse IMO to mess youself up by trying to push yourself before you're ready than being a "wimp" and just doing mild exercising at first to build up.
once i got to around 220 or so, i really ramped up the exercise but i learned a very valuable lesson back in sept 2010:
i did a 2-day ride (MS Jack and Bike..162 miles or so) and i had been dieting for close to a year by this point.
so you do about 78 or so miles each day..and there are rest stops along the way (about 5) with food bars, ice cream sandwiches, pb & j scandwiches, nuyts, etc. then ther'es a lunch stop. then there's all the burgers and hot dogs you can eat once you get to the distillery on sat.
then sat night there's a bbq.
then sun morning there's a big breakfast.
then there's 5 rest stops on he way back
then there's a huge buffet back in nashville when you arrive back at 4pm.
well guess what happened to me?
instead of this being the culmination of months of hard work by doing a 160 miles on my bike and losing 2-3 lbs..i gained SIX
the point is i felt i DESSERVED it. i never felt full or like i had eaten too much..i just nibbled all day long for 2 days and ended up after 10 or more hours on the bike...gaining weight which took me several weeks to get back off.

I walked a half marathon a weekend in Sedona... gained three that weekend.
Next weekend walked a half in Austin... but also visited Salt Lick BBQ (family style buffet)....... not pretty.
Now mine wasnt a case of thinking I deserved it (i knew better but was just a slob lol)

its tough..especially in a 'festival' environment where there's all the good food & stuff to temp you.
you shouldn't deprive yourself either and not eat..thats part of the event..but i was definitely decieving myself in thinking that the 150 mile ride was going to help me meet my weight loss goals.

However, if your primary goal is fat loss and overall weight loss, lengthy cardio sessions are completely ineffective.
I'm not disagreeing with this and this statement is not even directed at CAD. However, while we all want to look great and lose weight, let's not forget that most of us fatties (and most skinnies) also need some extended cardio for a healthier ticker.
That being said, if you guys have never checked out Body for Life, it includes a great exercise program that incorporates exactly what Cad is talking about. You do 3 days of weight training per week and 3 days of cardio. The cardio sessions are only 20 minutes but vary intensity level as follows:
Minute Intensity Level
1 5
2 5
3 6
4 7
5 8
6 9
7 6
8 7
9 8
10 9
11 6
12 7
13 8
14 9
15 6
16 7
17 8
18 9
19 10
20 5
(ETA: I hate formatting issues on TD)
The weight training uses a similar strategy.
I used this workout plan a few years ago and lost 45 pounds in 12 weeks, while putting on some good lean muscle.
Now if I can just get my lazy arse back on that plan.

perfect HIIT training scenario. if you are in shape enough not to hurt yourself i endorse this 20 minutes whole heartedly.

I like the exercise plan of BFL and do a version of it. my only "beef" with it is the constant grazing for 6 days and the built in Cheat Day on day 7. eating 6 times a day is not something I would do. That said, I do know several people who are doing it with success.

What's BFL?
I agree. And I couldn't eat 6 small meals a day.. My schedule doesn't really allow for that. My breaks are 15 minutes so I have enough time to piss, grab water, eat a snack, and get back to work.

Guys I'm going to get skinny and buy one of these:
YAMAHA YZF-R6
I'd love to have a bike like that. Great gas mileage, etc. If I could have that bike and keep my current shite vehicle for things like nights on the town or something, that'd be awesome. I'll get all the ladies.

It worked when I did it before, but this time I am just going to use the exercise portion of BFL while continuing the Atkins eating plan.

So I just did 20 minutes of what I would call interval training.. I started out walking about a 1/4 mile just to get warmed up (besides stretching).. then I would jog pretty hard for a minute, then walk for 2 minutes, then jog for a minute.. the last couple of jogs were more like 30 seconds, but man I'm burnt! And time flew by.

So I just did 20 minutes of what I would call interval training.
IMO that is a great workout. short, sweet, complete, like Billy Joel sang. My sprints are a misnomer so I cal them OM (old man) sprints. young joggers pass me. Your sprints could be BM (big man) sprints but some might see BM sprints and think of the runny mess.

My lungs are still recovering from smoking for 5 years.. I quit 3 weeks ago but they stol hurt from that running ha ha. Im actually kind of athletic, I played football in jr big and high school. I know how to run properly and such, and I have enough muscles in my legs to carry me well.

quitting smoking is the best decision you've ever made. I smoked for 15 years and quit 20 yrs, 4 mos, and 8 days ago, but whose counting. weight control is your #2. Dog is #3 I guess but could have been a gerbil.
