Pman and L Earl are now bringing OT expertise because of 5 or 10 lbs of success. reminds me of smokers who know the only way to quit everyday.
hey, im not the one blabbling about "the only way" and "the best way" and "the government is out to get us" BS.
there are many different ways to lose weight, and I dont think I once have claimed AT ANY POINT IN THIS LONG THREAD that my way was the best way.
on the other hand there is a 360 lb man telling everyone that after a few days of research, that he knows the right way. Im not blasting him. He has lost weight using his method. This is a discussion thread, as well as a motivational thread. We are just talking. I cant say that I agree with his tone much, but it is working for him.
maybe you are just joining this thread late. Not sure where you form your opinion about me from. But I never claim to be an expert. I have, however, lost nearly 90lbs from my peak weight over the last few years. I've done a lot of diets. Ive had personal trainers. Ive plateaued. I've lost. Ive gained back again. Ive have been privileged enough to be able to attend weight loss clinics/conventions put on by experts for 3 months out the year in california. I wouldn't call myself an expert, no. But I would say I am well versed to at least comment that a hamburger patty from McDonalds is not very healthy for you. And also can admit that there isn't one set way to lose weight and get healthy. Or else everyone would be doing it.
sorry if I offended you. Wasn't meant to get off track here.
I actually want to try atkins, but i cant stay away from alcohol enough for it to work for me. So I have been doing a low calorie diet, with exercise 3-5 times a week. Everyone is different.

LE and I are just saying that exercise should probably be an integral part of the routine. The number on the scale is important but I think it's more important to try to get lean than it is to lose weight at any cost. There is nothing wrong with putting on some muscle in the process and that will help keep the fat off long term.
I agree wholeheartedly

I legitimately believe that the low carb way is the best. I will recommend it and push it but obviously I can't force anyone and I try not to pressure people into it. If I came off as rude or pushy I apologize. I believe what I do, and it's not just a couple of days of research. I constantly look things up online while I'm bored at work. I can tell you why I believe what I do, I'm not some brainless bastard that follows exactly what the book or myth or cad have told me, but it doesn't change people's minds anyway. Most of the time I don't bother but for some reason today was just the day I said frick it.
Very sorry, friends?
P.s.
I'm not 360 pounds anymore

man its no big deal. Just discussing things. You know a few posts back you called someone close minded for not believing in the diet you are pushing, yet in the same respect you are being close minded for only thinking low carb diet is the way to go.
it's a two way street. Just different sides of the spectrum. If he is being closed minded, you'd fit the same description.
Some of us will believe in the same methods, some won't. We'll just try and keep the bickering to a minimum

Actually I didn't say someone is closed-minded for not believing in my diet. I said if you watch Fat Head and don't at least think twice about what you're eating, then you're closed minded. The movie is a counter to Supersize Me and isn't about Atkins at all. The narrator/director (along with doctors) does go into a FANTASTIC discussion of how cholesterol works in your body and how sugars and carbs are broken down and why they're not good for you like "experts" seem to think. Basically, the guy goes from a vegan diet (his gf is a vegan) to eating nothing but fast food for a month. He limits his carb intake to 100g per day, and ups his exercise. He loses weight, and all of his heart signs improved. Cholesterol is down, HDL is up, LDL is down, triglycerides stayed the same IIRC, BP went down. He also goes on to describe how the current recommended nutritional guide came about, and how shady it all was.
It's pretty eye-opening.
And believe me I know other diets work. I have done weight watchers in the past and lost 45 pounds over the course of a summer. But I no longer think it's the most heart healthy or "best" way.
I guess the whole anti-atkins thing strikes a nerve for me. I've had to push out so many people's negative thoughts about it, family and friends alike, that it really irritates me when someone tries to tell me it's not a healthy diet. So I kind of went off today.

Right. And I'll also add that I was 335 back in 2005. I've lost a good portion then hit a brick wall and my weight has fluctuated between 255-275 over the last few years.
The only time I ever stopped losing weight or gained weight was when I stopped exercising.
I think a balanced low calorie diet and exercise works best for myself also. The idea of completely eliminating foods just doesn't work with me. If I want a banana I'm going to fricking eat it and no a-hole is going to tell me that a banana is bad for me because it has carbs in it.

well-balanced to me is ~75g of carbs per day. I can't do that til I'm finished losing weight though. With that much in a day you can have a banana!
Whatever works dudebroman. I've never been a carboholic so the switch was fairly easy for me.

Yeah...and I've actually cut back on the carbs that I don't really deem to be very beneficial.
I haven't eaten white rice. Almost all of my carbs come from the following:
Bananas
My oatmeal with honey and cinnamon
Sweet chili sauce (I might cut that out)
Wheat bread
Apple sauce
I'm trying to avoid starches because I really don't see much nutritional benefit in most of them.

That's all not too bad. Do you eat all of that in a day typically?

Not necessarily...I kinda go on kicks with bananas. I either don't have enough of them or I have way too many and I let them go bad.
Which is odd because every time I eat one I think it's delicious
I've been eating them with about a TBSP of plain peanut butter from whole foods (not that sugar infused shite that comes in a can)

Yeah...I used to use the traditional PB
But I figured I'd just get the plain stuff you grind yourself at whole foods. I'm usually mixing it with something sweet anyway so there isn't any point in me getting a sweet PB

I must apologize to Pman and L Earl. Sorry to reek on you. my low carb rage and control issues creep out now and again.

This better be muscle build up that's slowing me down. I went from 342 to 336 in 2 days, then back up to 338 for 2 days, and now 337 again.

i have this discussion constantly on bike racing forums. the traditional 'eat a gigantic bowl of pasta' carbo-load mentality still dominates the cyling world.
its not necessary. i bring NOTHING to eat on my bike races (that are between 40-60 miles long) except one bottle of water..while i watch everyone else who lines up frantically consuming bananas, gel stingers and cliff bars.
- i've never bonked. these guys can't go more than 30 miles without stuffing more food down their throat after their 'sugar rush' knocks them on their arse.
- i get stronger as the race goes on.
- i do not have a problem with 'fast twitch' muscles not kicking in. i can outsprint just about everyone.
- i do hard interval training on an empty stomach (last night i didnt eat all day and did over an hour of repeat hill climbs at V02 max and cranked out 330+ average watts on each.)
- i can ride 5-6 hours or easily do 100 miles and not get tired or bonk from lack of carbohydrate energy.
- i finished 16th out of 50 people in my first bike race in 10 years (including a shitload of 20 and 30 year old punks) and 12th in my last one.
- i eat 3 scrambled eggs and maybe some bacon or sausage about 430am on race day..i usually eat a steak the night before.
what's the point? everyone on the forums still laughs and tells me i could be 'doing better' if i ate the "right way". you don't have to "quit" low carb eating to be competitive. i'm damn competitive and i don't have to shove 5 bananas down my throat to be that way.
maybe the sugar high/crash insulin rush is no better for you than worrying that you are eating too much protein and putting a strain on your kidneys.
i'd rather feel good all day than just a few minutes with a sugar spike.
eta after a hard ride one day i drank a G2 and almost threw up it upset my stomach so badly. NO THAN YOU.
i'll drink powerade zero all day and get all the electrolytes i need without consuming sugar that throws me out-of-whack.
thank god for powerade zero. why did it take so long for someone to invent a sports drink to replace sodium & potassium that wasn't loaded with sugar?????

Put on a brand new shirt yesterday that my wife bought me 3 years ago. Couldnt button it then, fit and was actually a little loose yesterday. On the issue of what diet is best I think you just gotta find what works for your body. I ate a grapefruit(unsweetened) for breakfast, an apple and an orange for lunch, and a salad and a grilled chicken breast(skinless) for dinner for 3 months and lost a grand total of 5 lbs., on Low Carb I have lost 48 lbs in a little over 4 months. My wife did really well on Weight Watchers and did really badly on Atkins. Go figure? I also have stated that when I reach the weight I want to stay at, 175? that if I gain 5 lbs I will immediately go back into the Low Carb discipline until I get back to my stay at weight. OK enough ramblings for now.

Hey CAD how do you link the charts? I have my weight loss on Excel and I made a chart on Excel that shows my progree or degress whichever is the case. Found an interesting correlation on Cheats and how they effect my weight.

Stay the course. 337 is still 5 pounds less than 342 (and 5 lbs of fat is pretty large chunk if you look at it visually)
I weighed this morning and today is my fourth day at 263.0 I know I'm not gaining fat and that's all I'm worried about. I expect there is some moderate muscle gain offsetting the fat loss right now because of how much leg work I've been putting in.

You got any plans for Easter weekend? I need you to eat a few chocolate rabbits because I am going to destroy a crawfish boil on Saturday.
