then I think it's safe to say you've hit a plateau.

on another note, it can only be labeled as a plateau if you are doing what you are supposed to do and you aren't losing weight.

if you are only dieting, and not exercising, 1 bad meal in a day can especially screw up weight loss for days at a time.

And im not just talking about Atkins. That is how it is on any diet. It only takes 1 cheat meal.

If you are exercising, then it is less likely. Truthfully though, no one that big that is both exercising and dieting will hit a plateau that fast after starting a diet. True plateau's generally come after long periods of extended weight loss. Gaining weight is pretty rare. Prob means you cheated a time or 2 and are not exercising

Right...maybe look for some ways to cut calories without making yourself hungry...that's one way to cheat the system.

Don't drink any milk or juices for a week. Only consume water. That could shave off a pound a week if he's drinking a lot of his calories.

I know personally, I do not eat anything I'm not supposed to. Ever. That being said, I do drink every other weekend or so, but I have things that are carbless. And in those 11 days I didn't lose any, and actually gained 3 pounds, I didn't drink at all. I wasn't exercising. I started exercising and within 2 days I had busted the plateau. Exercise isn't optional!

And like I said, you need to look long term. Exercising shouldn't be something that you're doing just for the sake of losing weight. It should just be something that you integrate into your daily habits for the rest of your life. Once you look at it like that, you're good to go.

I know it's stupid of me to be preaching all of this since I've only been on the wagon for a week but I truly believe what I'm saying. It's the only way to ensure long term success.

Exercise is actually optional. Does it make you healthier yes, but you can lose 100 pounds without doing any damn exercise. Someone around here happened to do just that.

I truly believe that my diet WORKED this time because I didn't exercise and burn myself out before I got most of the weight off.

So I actually advocate no exercise until you are nearing your goal. Then get in shape.

We are overweight because we have trouble moderating anything in our lives. Thus most people diet and go full tilt on exercise and in two months they are burned out.

Just my two cents even though it is worth only a penny.

I know that worked for you. But it's actually terrible advice.

And as you said you hit a slump and had zero muscle mass. If you had been doing resistance training all of this time you'd be in a much better position to keep the weight off long term.

bullshite. 99.99% of people that start diets, quit them. Burnout is probably the #1 reason.

It's a fundamental lack of discipline

You succeeded because you were able to discipline yourself

Myth is right. I lost 25 pounds without exercising. I wanted to see how far I could go without exercise because everytime I try to lose, I kill myself at the gym and think I can cheat on the diet. Wrong.

I have probably plateaued because I am not exercising regularly. I'm changing that this week, starting with the 7 mile ride last night. Wednesday and Friday I will do it again and build from there. Things should start to move after that. I hope.

Why is that bewildering? I'm just saying what happened. I've lost all this weight while living an insane schedule by eating way less. Things are slowing down a bit and I am making time to exercise now. But, I wasn't before - still lost weight. Now, I'm not losing so I need to exercise more often, which I am starting to do.

I used to exercise regularly but would eat what I wanted. That didn't work.

It's about moderation. Burnout occurs if someone pushes themselves too hard, especially in the exercise department.

It really doesn't take much exercise.. Atkins recommends 3x a week 30 minutes of brisk walking. That's not a lot. Hell I'm doing 30 minutes a day right now.

I know that not exercising worked for you and you lost a ton of weight and it's all very admirable, but I truly don't believe that will work for everyone. I thought so just a few weeks back, but when I hit that plateau and it didn't break until I started walking again, that told me about all I needed to know.. The way I see it, when I was swimming every day I lost a shite ton very fast.. I stopped swimming, I stopped losing. I started walking, I started losing.

Right. But it's all about self-control and discipline. I definitely have always had a problem with burnout. I don't know if you remember that far back (yes I'm calling you old! ) but when I first started wondering about this thread, I told you guys that I normally burn out of exercising in about 2 weeks. Because I was overworking myself. I'd power walk for 45 minutes and try to hit 2 miles minimum in the morning and in the evening. Too much. I realize that now. It's not just about burning extra calories, it's about pacing yourself and getting into the routine and maintaining discipline to keep it up. So far I've had problems maintaining discipline.. but I'm trying to change that because I want to see the fat melt away. But I do hate cardio

And don't take this as an attack. I know that not exercising worked for you and it very well may work for others. But I don't think it's going to work that way for me.

That was sarcasm.
