Combine these, work at it for a week, you'll drop weight.

A lot of doctors will tell you that 2 lbs a week is about the most you should lose anyway.

You averaged 1.67 lbs over that 3 week period. That's nothing to scoff at. That's good consistent progress.

If you could do that every week, it wouldn't take you that long to drop a significant amount of weight.

Plateaus happen. They separate the men from the mice.

Riding the bike may not work with the scale. Heck it has taken me a month to get back down to my low thanks to the muscle I have been gaining with the bike.

Stay strong and eventually the weight will drop again.

I don't even think we should be referring to it as a plateau. He was averaging 1.67 lbs a week lost in those 3 weeks. That's progress. He got off to a quick start. He's still averaging over 4 lbs a week.

True
But he's also not dropped any weight in 9 days.. that constitutes a plateau imo

Day 9 of my plateau. I have not lost a pound in 9 days but am still eating sparsely, drinking water, nothing fried or deserts or pastas or bread or potatoes or cheese, milk, etc. Frustrating.

I amped up the calories on Saturday trying to get my metabolism going again. No effect.

I've taken Myth's advice and started riding the bike yesterday. Rode 7 miles with some serious hills. I was excited about the ride, but no effect yet on weight loss.

I was really excited when I lost 20 lbs. in about 3 weeks, but now, I've just lost 5 lbs. in the past 3 weeks and nothing in the past 9 days. I'm sticking with it, but I would really like to lose some more weight.

I have days where I barely cross 1000 calories, other days when I get to about 1800-2000 to try and keep my body out of starvation mode - but that is all with really healthy food. But, I have not splurged or had a bad day in a month.

On Saturday, I ate some cornbread with honey as the first thing sweet I've had in a month. That was actually on purpose, thinking I might be able to get things started again if I ate little the next day or two.

Still at 230.

stop weighing every day(sounds like you are getting discouraged) and get out and exercise more. even if it just walking a mile or 2

losing 5 lbs in 3 weeks is good. Some of you guys are really extreme about losing big numbers. I don't understand it. To put it in perspective, you could be gaining weight. Be happy you are dropping pounds.

i need to show y'all my chart..its at work. i 'plateaued' for almost 3 months back in the fall/winter. just alot of stress and lack of exercising and of course holiday food everywhere.

the *good* news is i didn't gain anything..my goal was really to stay where i was so i could continue dropping later.

my overall weightloss since last january (yes i'm charting this) was around .96/week. that means i've consistently lost nearly a pound per week for the last year & 4 months. Back in early January, this had dropped to about .85 due to the stall...but the last 3 months have been insane for me with the race training and watching what i'm eating.

the point i'm making is i spent nearly THREE MONTHS at the same weight..yet on the whole i've maintained 1lb/week loss even with that.

listen to powerman..you're in this for the win..1lb/week is nothing to be ashamed of and you stand a better chance keeping it off forever if you've shaped your patterns over a long period of time.

i still say weighing every day is your best weapon..that will help keep you motivated..focus on a 5lb range..and not an indivdual number.

i was 82lbs overweight..now i'm roughly 10lbs away from 185...and 20 away from my ultimate 'fit goal' which is 175.

anyone can lose 20lbs..so now i'm focusing on the exercise so i dont look anemic when i drop that last 20.

Thanks guys. That's good perspective. I lost so much so fast that it fooled me. Now, its work and slow, but if I know that's what its supposed to be, I can stick with it. Plus, it does build the patterns I need.

Per Myth's advice, I started on the bike and loved it. It was a beautiful night and I rode downtown and even saw friends I wouldn't have run into. Great, heartpounding exercise that even had a social aspect. So, I'll be doing that a few times a week.

This is a great thread. We should put it together like the "As the Plains Burn" thread with the best advice and a list of the 30 lbs or more club.

Or something like that. I'll probably have some advice to share after I get to 215 or so.

Big fricking deal. He's over 200 lbs. Some weight fluctuation will occur. If he's still eating well and exercising the weight loss will come around.

You have to look long term

Jesus.. tone down the hostility a little

I'm just saying, I didn't lose weight and actually gained a few pounds for 11 days, I called it a plateau and nobody jumped my shite.

I'm not being hostile. I'm trying to encourage the guy. He's still on the downward trend which is a good thing.

I don't think it's really to his benefit to convince him that he is stuck in some sort of rut when it doesn't really even appear that he is.

If he stays the course he'll be fine.

It also doesn't help to pretend he isn't in a plateau when clearly zero drop for 9 days is.

You need to get used to plateaus not pretend they don't happen. I've had a million of them and whined and bitched about every one of them in this thread.

Misinterpreted as hostile, sorry Powerman.

But imo, you can't just average out what you've lost in a month and say you didn't hit a plateau.. if you're losing weight, no matter how little, then you're not in a plateau. But if you've gone over a week without a loss, or even a gain like I did, then I think it's safe to say you've hit a plateau.

Well some of it could be muscle....and if you're staying even then you're probably doing ok

He probably has run into the same trap Cad hit me with. My weight stalled for the last month because I had ZERO muscle on my body. ZERO.

I am the creature Kelly LeBrock turned Bill Paxton into at the end of Weird Science.

So I have been putting muscle on which has killed my weight loss.

BUT, even knowing that it is frustrating as hell when the scale sticks or even goes up.

I bet Cad has some spike traps and oil jets he can release off the back of his bike during races. He is just that fiendish.

I haven't lost anything in 3-4 days and it is pissing me off. I have not cheated one time since I started on 2/12. It is discouraging, but you have to just keep trucking along and keep the faith.

I know I need to add some aerobics, but I am slammed trying to get the yard and garden going. I do a lot of lifting and raking and mowing, etc. One day I will get caught up to just maintaining everything, then I can get on the treadmill and/or bike.

But I damn well better see a loss tomorrow morning.

Well nothing wrong with that. It's not all about just the weight. It will help your metabolism in the long run and help you keep it off.

I've been doing weights before cardio every time I hit the gym. Today I worked legs really hard and jumped on the eliptical for 20 minutes.

By the time I got on my heart rate was already up. I always do a few heavy sets of leg press before cardio to get the blood flowing.
