Taking a trip in a few weeks with the family. Little kids, so most brewery tours are off limits. 4 Days in Portland. Down to crater lake, back up the coast and Mt Hood before we depart.

Is there anything that I must see. I've got a shite ton already that I've dropped POIs for, but curious if anyone has experience and insights.

Criteria:
interesting ethnic > fancy/high end
must be able to drag the little guys through with us

f you're going down to Crater Lake, you may want to head over towards the coast after that and drive up through North Bend, Newport, Tillamook, Cannon Beach, and Astoria.

There are plenty of breweries that offer great food, views, and are kid friendly.

Pelican Brewpub in Pacific City is right next to Kiwanda State Park. I've posted this before, but the view never gets old.

Also, I've said many times before that the brewpub experience at Fort George is just fantastic, and they have great views of the mouth of the Columbia river. Even better views can be had a Buoy Brewing Company, which is also kid-friendly.

A trip to Multnomah Falls is a must. It's right on the main highway, so you don't have to hike far. From there, go to Hood River.

Another brewpub that is very kid friendly is pFriem Family Brewing in Hood River - there is a park with a playground about 50 feet away from the entrance to the brewpub and you can watch your kids play while sitting on the patio at the brewpub. The Park is right on the Columbia River Gorge, so the views are spectacular there, as well. Double Mountain has fantastic Pizza - much better than your typical pizza fare. It is more of a restaurant, though, whereas pFriem offers more for the young 'uns.

If going to Hood River, drive across the river to Washington on the Bridge of the Gods, drive east on the Washington side of the river, and then drive back into Oregon on the Hood River Bridge. The view of Mount Hood is amazing coming back across the bridge. You can't see Mt Hood from the Oregon side of the river because of the cliffs and trees that block the view.

Hood river is also a neat little town to walk around in.

There are lots of parks and entertainment options in Portland. OMSI is a great science museum for kids. There are lots of food truck pods around the city - kids like them because they get to pick from a lot of choices. Parents like it because it's usually pretty reasonably priced.

Go to the Saturday Market on the weekend. The Farmers market is pretty cool on Saturday morning at Portland State University. There are food trucks at both of those places, so you can make a meal out of it.

Portland has a lot of eclectic neighborhoods with restaurants that should be right up your alley. Neighborhoods on Mississippi Avenue, Division St (around 30th thru 35th), the Pearl District, downtown, and Burnside St are really cool. If you see anything that looks interesting while you're walking/driving around, you can look up the reviews to see if it is worth going to. We do that a lot.

Chinatown in the Pearl District is interesting, too.

Thanks Guys! We're in PDX 4 nights, then one each: crater lake cabin, yachats (on beach), cannon beach (on beach...holy shite expensive), and then the last at Timberline on Mt Hood.

That drive up the coast is beautiful.

Cannon Beach is beautiful, peaceful, and classy. Seaside just down the road is a little trashier, but has more going on. Astoria is about 25 miles north of CB. Astoria Column gives you a spectacular view, but you have to climb 180 feet of stairs...

When going through Tillamook, stop at the cheese factory, eat some cheese samples, and get an ice cream cone. The ice cream is excellent. Maybe not Salt and Straw good, but excellent.

Speaking of Salt and Straw, if you google it, there are several locations in Portland and they serve great ice cream. All of the Salt and Straw locations are in cool neighborhoods with neat restaurants. So if you park near a Salt and Straw, you will be able to find many good places to eat within a block or two...

Also, when staying at Timberline, make sure to pass through Hood River, either when coming to or from...

Thanks for all the info. We were considering staying in Hood River but then found an opening at Timberline. I may try to hunt up a U-pick fruit place. I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what might be in season early August. I think I'll be too early for apples, but possibly still in good peach season.

Peaches and berries should be available.

I will be down in Newport, August 14-16. When are you going to be down that way?

ETA: Timberline will be spectacular. You can still ski that time of year, too.

You might consider a tuna charter. The albacore should still be running and the El Nino pattern has pushed a ton of the that way.

If you walk down Division or Hawthorn, you will find great food basically no matter where you end up going. Also a nice flavor of "real Portland" outside of downtown and the Pearl District. 3 Doors Down near Hawthorne is my favorite spot in SE and not somewhere you're going to find any tourists

Good call. I was referring to the area of Division St where Bollywood Theatre/Pok Pok/Ava Gene's/Salt and Straw are (and that's only the tip of the iceberg). There is also a really cool food cart pod right there on Division at 28th or so...

Hawthorne has a lot of great places, as well.

If you really want to get crazy, go over to NE Alberta St. Hipster central. Some really eclectic places over that way...

I talked to a little old black lady over on NE Alberta st a few weeks back. She told me her home she had lived in her home for 26 years, and that when she moved into it, the neighborhood was not safe, but it was cheap. Now the neighborhood was an artist's dream. Her cheap house was now worth almost a million dollars. She felt really bad because people like her could no longer afford to live there. I told her not to feel bad, because she and people like her had helped change the neighborhood and made it more desireable to live and visit, which is what drove up the prices. The only way the price was going to go down now, was for the neighborhood to go downhill, and nobody wants that.

Since you are staying in Yachats, you need to drive over to Newport and eat at Local Oceans Seafood. It is very good. Roasted Garlic & Dungeness Crab soup, Fisherman's Stew, Moqueca de Piexe, Crab Poboy. You can put your name and cell phone down and walk around the town til your table is ready.
The Tillamook factory is super crowded. We got some cheese through the sample line, got ice cream and got out of there. Not a bad stop and nice treat.
Cannon Beach is up there on my favorite places list. Ecola State Park has some nice hikes and great views.
If you do go to Fort George Brewery in Astoria, I recommend the upstairs and getting the pizza.
Portland: Pine State Biscuits

Crater Lake is incredible...sounds like you are coming in from the north. It took us about 45 minutes of waiting in line to get through the north entrance. Do the Cleetwood Cove Trail to the water. You can jump in off a little cliff. Go to the lodge after and sit in rocking chairs and have a drink. Wine tasted better there with that view.
The Oregon coast is amazing as well. Cape Perpetua is a great area near Yachats. The driving in general may take a little longer than you are expecting...two lane, curving roads for the most part. Enjoy...that's an awesome part of the country!

Lots of great suggestions but I'll add one: if you're going to check out Multnomah Falls, you might has well drive the Historic Columbia River Scenic Hwy. Put 'Portland Women's Forum' in your GPS and it's an amazing drive once you check out that view point. There are tons of hikes along the highway. The Columbia River Gorge is an absolute must and just outside of Portland.

View from Portland Women's Forum viewpoint:

You absolutely have to go to Pok Pok in portland. It's the best Thai food in the United States hands down. They do not do reservations, but the restaurant is in a cool part of town. Put your name down and there is plenty to do to pass the time.

It is definitely in a cool part of town. There are lots of interesting ethnic restaurants in the area. There is also a fantastic taproom right there - the Imperial Taproom and Bottleshop.

Thanks again guys for all the input. I've heard of pok pok, and likely seen it on TV at some point. Is there any other unusual ethnic food that may not be top of mind? I saw there was a few places serving Burmese. I'm a big fan of Sichuan, but I've found a few places already that should fit that bill.

Hey Cajun, sorry for the hijack, at least you get a bump!!

There are so many good replies. I will be in Portland as well during the second week of August for work. I may take my wife and have the opportunity to take 1/2 day off. What would be something interesting if you have 4 or 5 hours of daylight?

Thank you

Le Pigeon in Portland is awesome. Man up and go climb this, you will f'n love getting through the boulder fields and then ash the upper 1/3. Have to get a permit ahead of time to hike.

The maritime museum in Astoria is pretty cool if you make it there, it's north of Cannon Beach. The grumpy sea lions on the floating docks can get a little interesting, too. Might check into kite boarding in Hood River and there is also a fish hatchery that is worth seeing.

I've already mentioned Ava Gene's (Italian) and Bollywood Theatre (Indian). Both are within 2-3 blocks of Pok Pok on Division.

Kachka for Russian food is supposed to be fantastic. Le Pigeon (French) is fantastic, as well.
