A new spot on corner of State & Magazine by Chef Tory McPhail, Ti Martin, and Darryl Reginelli. Menu looks interesting. After all the talk about sampling hundreds of fried chicken recipes they went with a “Crawfish boil fried chicken” version. Anyone been yet?

Went last night. My first piece of fried chicken was delicious, the others were a lil dry (smaller pieces). The crab tacos were meh. The biscuit and gravy was pretty good. The drinks were meh. Interior design was nice.

Did the chicken have a heavy crab boil flavor or is that just a gimmick for “spicy chicken”? Sucks ab the tacos just being meh.

It was just spicy chicken to me. It did come with what they claimed were crab boil fixins, which was diced carrots, tiny corn on the cobs, and a couple small pieces of sausage. The biscuit was good though.

I really wanted to try the pig dip sandwich but they were out of pimento cheese.

I don't know about this "Tumbled Pimento Cheese".

I saw a picture of the fried chicken somewhere, but it wasn't what I was expecting.

That menu contains nothing to motivate me across the threshold. Way way too many saturated flavors.....and the pricing point screams Magazine and State, lol.

Incidentally, the best chicken sandwich found uptown at the moment is the smoked fried chicken thigh at Simone’s (lunch only).

I would eat the pig dip minus the pimento cheese. Chicken sandwich looks good too. S’mores looks a little try hard.

I didn’t get it today since I am by myself but the crab roll sounds interesting since another poster shot down the tacos.

I wanted to try the Pig Dip too but not when it’s just me

That's how we like it in West Riverside, keeps the riff raff out.

My personal opinion:

Overall: I liked it. I will be back to try other items (especially since it is less than 2 blocks from my house ).

Pros: Close to home, nice neighborhood restaurant. Prices are reasonable (for what I tried) compared to fast-food restaurants and similar restaurant concepts. Chicken is tender, juicy, crunchy and seasoned perfectly (for normal fried chicken). Biscuit was great. I have faith in the ownership that once they hit their stride, this could become my happy hour/quick snack spot. Decor is that of a picnic with bright lighting, welcoming atmosphere and a welcoming dining room floor. Place should be packed for the next few months.

Cons: Maybe my expectations were too high but I probably couldn't have picked the chicken out of a line up vs others in the same category. I thought it was going to be more similar to a "Nashville Hot" style fry and sauce combo along with "extras", boiled in LA crawfish boil seasoning. The "Crawfish boil basket" is definitely good and the center piece is the chicken but the "crawfish boil extras" (corn, sausage, mushrooms, celery) was not spicy nor cooked as a normal crawfish boil. The items were boiled without seasoning which was a HUGE disappointment. Cocktails while light and refreshing were nothing memorable. I tried their whiskey sour, vesper and "Locals Only". The alcohol was not overbearing but the flavors intended in each drink (besides the Vespar) were subpar.

I realize this is only their 2nd day, I have been to worse restaurant beginnings, and they will find their footing within the next few months. I'll definitely be back soon but if it wasn't so close to my house, I'd probably give it more time before I returned. I will say though that when I showed up, about 5:45, they had apparently had been without power for 3 hours (and apparently my house, but I never walked in before walking to Picnic after work) yet still had great attitudes and hospitality to accommodate guests while they prepared for the time lost/dinner.

I also went last night. We had the pig dip and chicken platter. Pig dip was solid and I probably would order that again over the chicken if I went back.

We did enjoy the chicken and the crystal spice they drop on top, but like another poster said the smaller pieces were a bit dry. Solid atmosphere and while I don’t live with gin walking distance, I’m pretty close by so I’ll probbably give it another try in a few months.
