Rouse's has seedless watermelons for $2.97.. I don't know much about picking one that is ripe and sweet. From what I have heard is look for the a bigger yellow spot and a dried up stem?
What do you look for to pick a sweet watermelon?

My Grandma always thumped them
It will sound hollow if it’s a good one

I let my wife picks them. She is usually pretty damn good at it. She thumps them. Can't remember if she's listening for it to sound hollow or dense.

Thump. The more hollow it sounds, the better the red part will be. Look at the stem. Should be there and be brown. Look at the spot that was touching the ground. Yellow white is good, Yellow brown is best.
Or better still, get my wife to pick it out for you. She is never wrong. Spooky.

take a broom straw to the store with you. balance the broom straw on top of the watermelon and gently release it. if it spins, the watermelon is ripe. if it stays still, move on to the next.

I thump them, and look for a brown stem. My wife says I do a good job of picking them. She loves them. I very seldom even take one bite.

Some other things to look for is for the light green of the watermelon to be paler, this will work on striped varieties.
Another method is to press down on the middle of the watermelon and compress it slightly. If you hear a "crunch" like sound or a muted pop coming from the watermelon, this will indicate ripeness. It is the sound of the heart separating due to the stress. This will not work on watermelons that were roughly handled in shipping or that were previously tested. The heart will only separate like that once.

Yep on the belly color. Yellow or darker is good. White or green is underripe.

Thump it. A mellon with a good heart will tell you to take it home with you.
