Pretty much this, but the pizza was so disgusting that I'd go with the faux-chicken sandwich if the soy looking hamburger wasn't an option.

Salmon pretty much nailed my experience. Then again, I think we are from the same area. shite was a joke. I guess I graduated 9 years ago now, so pretty much the same time period.

Didn't read this whole thread. But it made me think of the Tyler Florence series he made about school lunches.
Has that show been mentioned yet?

Went to public school in Spain for a year. School lunch looked absolutely nothing like this.
Most kids in Spain don't even eat lunch at school. The main meal of the day is at 3pm, which they eat at home.
I ate a bocadillo (sub with meat & cheese) every day.

I ate those crappy burgers anytime I ate too. But honestly, I skipped lunch quite a bit in HS. You're only there until 2:30, so I often didn't mind waiting until school was over.
And then there's senior year where you leave school @ 11:30AM anyway.

Neither of those were ever options for me. We always had athletic PE at the end of the day, meaning I needed all the caloric energy I could find. Then baseball practice after school.
If I didn't eat lunch then get seconds or eat a sammidge a little later on, I'd die.

I don't remember a school lunch series by him.
My memories of school lunches are delightful mental pictures of commodity food Mac and Cheese, Real Fish Sticks on Friday, A mysterious looking vegetable, hamburger and spaghetti soup that included all of the leftovers from the past week's menu served with commodity peanut butter and honey sandwiches, and the best spaghetti and meat sauce a little kid could want, served with the famous School lunch yeast rolls.
Burgers were only very occasionally served as they had not yet been invented back in those days.
Bad memories include canned boiled potatoes, chopped spinach that we thought were cooked lawnmower trimmings from the playground - with a slice of green boiled egg on top, Oil sausages that were repulsive. I was not all that fond of any of the canned vegetables they served at school, but joyfully ate all of the garden grown (fresh and frozen) peas and beans that mom served each night for supper.

Yeah, if you're one of those with after school stuff, you need lunch.
I was way too much of a slacker for that. Plus, I had to work every day after school.
Best friend and I worked at a daycare and didn't have to be there until 3, so on our early off days (Fridays) we'd leave school @ 11:30, nap, and then go shopping for tons of junk food to bring to the daycare and feast on.

It was Jamie Oliver. He, through his foundation, is working to improve school food. A short TV series, Food Revolution, focused on a West VA community.

I definitely have no idea. Like I said, lunches got progressively worse as I got older. I remember larger and nicer meals in elementary vs. very small lunches and poor quality in high school.
This could be due to a plethora of reasons, though. One being that elementary was Catholic school and high school was public.

Is that from someone's lunch recently or something? I'm confused.
I know we had nacho day when I was a kid, but I don't know how I'd feel about chips and cheese being my kid's lunch. Of course, I get chips and queso for lunch all the time so I guess I have no room to talk.
