Not defending staff being uninformed because its definitely something they should know about, but if you don't have beer nerds chomping at the bit to work for you, you have to make do with what you have. I'm sure they'd love to have good looking chicks in mini skirts who ALSO know a ton about beer but that's just not realistic. They should certainly give their staff more training but its inevitable rotating beers will fall through the cracks when your waitress probably drinks cranberry-vodkas in her free time.
Thats why you have a chalkboard that is up to date or print up daily beer menus like ave pub does. Then it really doesnt really matter if the t&a has brains.

Have you been to Chicago?
Awesome city.

Went for a second time last week. Counted 30 people in there. Took 40 minutes (not at all exaggerating) for my 2 friends to get their burgers. I know it's not a food place, but really? Yeah, it has a good beer selection. You definitely pay for it. I really want to like the place, but there is something about it that's just off.

Comfortable seating, solid beer selection, not lit like a dungeon, non smoking, and decent food when I want it. I know there isn't a ton of competition in Baton Rouge, but it's easily my favorite spot to get a drink with friends after work.

Problem is, maintaining that is expensive .. So guess what .. It's reflected in the beer prices .
for instance? what beers did you have and what were the prices?
I grabbed a Canebrake there last time and it was $5.00. Not bad imo. Endeavour was $5-6.

Kitchen is ridiculously slow
Like we said in the 10 page thread on the place, this is not a restaurant. At least I dont think people should treat it like that. You go there to drink beer.

but i wouldn't go planning on a nice meal
and you shouldnt. the name of the place is The Pelican House Tap Room & Whiskey Bar. its obvious this place isnt meant for dinner when you look at the menu. this goes back to the other thread and that we think theyre trying to please too many people right now.

Beer prices make the Londoner seem cheap .. Just my .02 ..
I havent been to the Londoner in awhile because I think the food is average, its far from my place, and the draft beer selection sucks arse.
This is what is listen on their website right now

This beer menu on the Londoner isnt anything to whip our weiners out and get excited over either
https://www.beermenus.com/places/5363-the-londoner-pub-and-grill
Some prices from that beer list
Draft:
Grimbergen Dubbel-6.50
Newcastle-5.50
Canebrake-5.50
Lawnmower-5.0
Bass Ale-5.0
Bottle:
Chimay Blue/Red(11oz)-9.75 each
Hitachino White(12oz)-11.20 lolz
Squatters Hop Rising-6.25
Stone IPA(12oz)-5.75
Corono Extra-4.25
This isnt exactly giving away the beer. Only thing I see with that menu and getting out with a cheap bar tab is to either not drink a lot or just drink complete shite beer.
Your review is a little harsh and blown out of proportion imo.

Being open during the day has a lot of people thinking its a restaurant. Older man whose a regular at my work was chatting with me about it and he was saying they need to expand their menu and said he saw them running off underage people at lunchtime.
Them being open for lunch in a business area has older folks assuming its a restaurant and then being disappointed in the food.

I had a burger and split an order of 7 napkin fries. Both were very tasty. Service was fast and friendly. No complaints and I plan to check it out again.

Have you had the gumbo ? I am dead serious .. the bowl is smaller than a lot of cups around BR .. It was thick and brown like a gravy with very little meat ..
I waited almost 45 minutes for it .. Don't fall back on the age old "we'll, it's not a restaurant, so you don't go there for food" excuse for that .. How hard is it to ladle gumbo into a teacup and microwave it ? If you went to a restaurant and had to wait 45 minutes for a cocktail, then, when it gets there, it's meh .. do you say "it's a restaurant, you go there to eat, you don't go there to drink booze" ??
The food at the Bulldog comes out quickly and is pretty tasty .. You don't go there for food, but they do it right .. What's the difference ? I just think high rent, combined with a high internal overhead = higher prices over there .. $3.50 for a pint of PBR ?
I'll be back, but the place needs to definitely work out a number of kinks ..

Exactly, LL .. If you are going to open at 11AM everyday for lunch, then, ALAS !!!!! You might just be a restaurant ... So, act like one if you are going to be one .. Menu is really small and really meh .. $11 for a burger ? Does the cup of gumbo come in a shot glass ? I don't know if the place needs Bar Rescue or Restaurant Impossible -- what is it ??

You say that BD food is tasty and then shite on the food at PH? It sounds like you don't as much care about good as you do cheap. Nothing wrong with that, but we should call it what it is
Posted on 6/9/13 at 12:31 pm to Joshjrn
I don't find the Bulldog cheap either .. Money's not a worry for me .. I don't care how much I spend, as long I feel like I got a decent value for my money .. Bulldog = great value .. PH = poor value out of the gate .. It's my opinion ..
Posted on 6/9/13 at 12:33 pm to Joshjrn
C'mon, it's Rag. You know by to try to justify his rants.
I will agree that PH needs some work. Hopefully being the owners first bar/restaurant they can get a ahold on the problems and work it out. At least they didn't keep the full menu after they realized that they were being buried by it.
Not sure how long people will continue to go with a subpar product. Eventually they will turn to WalkOns.

My biggest issue with PH is that they make me get off the couch to order food. Ain't nobody got time for that

This is how I feel. Their wings are like 11 bucks and you get less than a handful
I bitched about their portions in the previous thread.

You guys can think Bulldog is a good value until you end up with lung cancer later in life.
All else being equal, I'd probably pick Bulldog too. But all else isn't equal, because I can't go to Bulldog without leaving smelling like an ashtray. I can not handle that.

Maybe I haven't say there long enough, but I have never had someone come ask me for a food or beer order at the bulldog. Mostly sit outside so the couches might be another story.
Like B said, we left the Bulldog after one beer last time because some jackass sat right next to our group and started to chain smoke with what looked like a light beer.

Even though I smoke from time to time, I wholeheartedly agree with this.. it's something everyone is glossing over. No smoking in PH is one of my favorite things about it.
