Father in law makes this shite but with just the pear and cheese. I never eat it and gets his feelings hurt. Not like he had to spend all day over a stove making it. It's literally opening a can and sprinkling cheese. shite is nasty

Braggart!

My MIL made it for every holiday get together. I think my grandmother made it on occasion, as well. I loved it. No cherries for us.

I texted mom. She said lettuce pear, mayo and grated cheddar cheese. Prevalent on both sides of the fam at get togethers, more on her side though. She made it for us some on regular nights. We ate the shite out of it

ambrosia salad.

I had to Google that

Never had this thing in the OP, but my grandmother recently gave me a bunch of outdated (and AWFUL) cookbooks and the recipe is in every one.

Weird that there is so much scorn for people feeding their kids takeout and fast food when the "at home" recipes from back in the day aren't exactly nutritious either.

I love old cookbooks and rest texting old recipes from time to time. We made a few old junior league foods for a party recently and got multiple requests for the recipes. Three people made one of them for parties they were giving the next week.

Some of the ones she gave me would make you laugh. Various Catholic church cookbooks, neighborhood cookbooks, etc.

Iceberg lettuce, pineapple, cheese, and mayo. Never seen it with cherry before.

This!

My mom would serve this as a side salad all the time. Her, my dad, and sis loved them. I didn't care for them at all. Ah, the late 80's and 90's...

If you're going to bother making a pear salad and trying to eat it, you might as well do it right. Each pear goes on a leaf of iceberg (as has been said), and use cottage cheese instead of mayo.

I'm going to go vomit now.

Easily my favorite old cookbook recipe:

Who has the time to pick up that much fricking armadillo from the side of the road?

While I'm a youngin' myself, it seems to me that the attitude for many housewives back then was to put something quick, cheap, easy, and filling on the table. Lots of meatloaf, roast, beans, etc. for dinner in those days. The majority of them were no Julia Child's...plus Food Network wasn't around back then and the emphasis on food/restaurants/trying other cuisines/being foodies wasn't there either.

. I have a number of very old cookbooks. They're a hoot to read, but I promise I can find at least one idea or recipe in every one of them worth trying. Fun stuff. I read them like novels. I bought some at antique stores.
